As of now, at least seven people have been confirmed killed by direct gunfire from security forces, including a 15 year old minor, Mostafa Fallahi. More than one hundred people have been arrested, with reports increasing by the hour. Young men are being killed in the streets; minors are being detained and forcibly disappeared. This is not merely a human rights crisis. It is a national security issue for the United States. The Islamic Republic of Iran has American blood on its hands. Through its direct actions and proxy forces, it has been responsible for the deaths of hundreds of U.S. service members across the Middle East. It has plotted terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, attempted assassinations of American officials, and repeatedly worked to destabilize American society through intimidation, espionage, and proxy violence. What a resounding condemnation by (368-7) of the unhinging of the democratic process in Pakistan by the US Congress. A positive push in the right direction, along the lines of our own constitution, for democracy, rule of law, civilian control over our armed forces (not vice versa), personal freedoms, etc. Resolution 901 states in essence that: "The people of Pakistan deserve the respect of their government, the rule of law, free and fair elections and civilian command and control of their armed forces ...... "Whereas the Constitution of Pakistan states that ‘‘the Federal Government shall have control and command of the Armed Forces’’, and the oath taken by members of the Armed Forces swears they will ‘‘uphold the Constitution’’ and ‘‘not engage in any political activities; "Whereas an essential safeguard of democracy is civilian command and control of apolitical military and security forces; ........ OAU transport system was near perfect, adequate buses and bikes, we rarely experienced queues until the First Lady came and decided she didn’t like the ease of transportation and introduced “change” by donating CNG buses. The school management in turn banned all motorcycles and commercial buses on campus and subjected over 30,000 students to just about 50 buses and a few tricycles. OAU has one of the largest land masses of any Nigerian university, yet students are now stranded daily. This is a Monday morning where students are supposed to rush for class, but they are stuck at the campus gate because of the inefficiency of the CNG buses. Students are struggling to go to class in the morning and in the evenings to even get back to their hostels. Students staying off campus now spend almost double to get to campus, all alternative transport means have been removed The management have cars to bypass all of this, but majority of students do not. Yet they released statements talking about how the buses will “ease transportation” and even implied students appreciate the system. Meanwhile, students are trekking, missing classes, and spending hours in queues. Let it be clear that students do not appreciate this system. It has made our lives harder, not better. What used to be a smooth system has now become a daily struggle. There are many pressing issues in this school, but they chose to dismantle a working transport system and replace it with hardship. We can no longer remain silent. Let the whole world know what OAU students are going through.
