The trials included voice calls, video calls and mobile data sessions using standard 4G and 5G handsets rather than dedicated satellite phones or extra hardware. 2degrees said it has invested millions in the local ground station. It also said calls, data and messages on the service are designed to originate and terminate on the 2degrees core network without passing through another country or jurisdiction. Mark Callander, Chief Executive, 2degrees, described the project as a response to persistent coverage gaps in New Zealand. "AST SpaceMobile approaches satellite connectivity in a unique way. The service is designed to offer voice calling, data and SMS, extending connectivity into places that have traditionally been difficult to serve. 2degrees has invested millions in building a ground station locally, providing access to advanced technology that will enable connectivity for Kiwis outside traditional coverage areas," said Mark Callander, Chief Executive, 2degrees. 2degrees has not given a launch date for customers. Further testing will continue before it confirms timings for trials and a commercial launch. Callander also linked the timing to the pace of AST SpaceMobile's satellite deployment. "AST SpaceMobile has a robust launch roadmap, and with each additional satellite deployed, service availability increases. We will offer the service commercially when service availability reaches a level we consider viable," said Callander. Global push AST SpaceMobile is building a direct-to-device satellite network through partnerships with mobile operators rather than standalone satellite handsets. It has agreements with more than 50 mobile network operators globally, including Verizon, AT&T and Rakuten, covering a combined subscriber base of nearly three billion. That operator-led model has become a key part of the emerging race to provide mobile coverage from space. Telecom groups are exploring satellite links as a way to extend service in remote and rural areas, where conventional mobile towers are harder to justify on cost grounds or face geographic constraints. New Zealand's terrain and dispersed population have made that challenge particularly acute in some parts of the country. For 2degrees, the Marton ground station provides domestic infrastructure as it seeks to add satellite links to its existing mobile network. 🇷🇺 Russia’s Starlink killers showcase new era of electronic battlefield warfare Russia has ramped-up EW use to detect and jam Elon Musk’s Starlink terminals and satellites, Ukrainian media reports. 👉 Meet Russia’s key counter-Starlink systems: 🔸 Volna Kupol Garant Russia’s latest electronic warfare system reportedly uses a directed high-frequency radio beam to disrupt Starlink operations. Rather than damaging satellites orbiting roughly 500 kilometers above Earth, the system blinds them – cutting their ability to connect with ground terminals while they remain under attack. According to reports, Volna is a mobile system built around six trailers. Each carries a pair of steerable satellite dishes mounted on rotating platforms. A single battery is reportedly capable of denying Starlink coverage across an area of up to 20 sq km. Some analysts say the system was previously referenced under the designation Peresvet-M, although this has not been independently confirmed. Ukrainian sources claim Volna was first deployed during Russia's offensive in the Kharkov region in 2024. Western media warns that while Tobol disrupts GPS signals on a broad scale, the Kalinka’s precision-targeting capabilities could pose a more direct threat to specific military operations. 🔸 Krasukha The Krasukha-S4 is designed to neutralize reconnaissance satellites, ground-based radar installations, and airborne surveillance systems. It does so by emitting powerful electronic jamming signals that disrupt key radar bands and other radio-frequency emissions. A standard Krasukha-S4 battery consists of two vehicles and has an operational range exceeding 300 kilometers. 🔸 Borshchevik The light mobile system is designed to detect and geolocate Starlink terminals within a 180-degree sector at ranges of up to 10 km, with a reported accuracy of five meters. Using direction-finding and biangulation algorithms, it can locate a target in less than three minutes at a single scanning position. The Borshchevik-2 airborne system hunts Starlink signals from the sky, with reported accuracy down to 0.4 m.

Carney wants sweeping powers over your phone while using a foreign one himself 🇨🇦 Sheila Gunn Reid According to the Wall Street Journal, Carney has continued using a British cellphone while speaking with foreign leaders. Prime Minister Mark Carney wants sweeping new powers over Canada's telecommunications system. But according to a recent Wall Street Journal report, when it comes to his own communications, he's reportedly relying on a U.K.-based cellphone to communicate with foreign leaders. If true, the irony is impossible to ignore. The Carney government is pushing Bill C-22, legislation that would significantly expand Ottawa's authority over Canada's telecommunications sector in the name of national security. The bill would give the federal government broad powers to issue security orders to telecommunications companies, require providers to comply with government directives, and increase federal oversight of Canada's communications infrastructure. Canadians are being told these extraordinary powers are necessary because secure communications matter. Apparently, that principle may not apply to the Prime Minister himself. According to the Wall Street Journal, Carney has continued using a British cellphone while speaking with foreign leaders. If that reporting is accurate, Canadians deserve answers. The issue isn't simply where the phone was purchased; it's about whether the Prime Minister is following the same security, transparency, and record-keeping standards imposed on everyone else in government, and now on the public. Among the questions that should be answered: ➢ Communications security: Was the device approved for sensitive government communications under standards established by the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) and Treasury Board? ➢ Government records: Were official calls, text messages and other communications retained in accordance with the Library and Archives of Canada Act and federal information management policies? ➢ Access to Information: If government business was conducted using a foreign device or foreign telecommunications provider, are those records preserved in a manner that complies with the Access to Information Act, or could they be more difficult for Canadians to obtain? ➢ Government device policies: Was the phone issued, managed and secured by the Government of Canada, or was it a personal device used for official business? Foreign jurisdiction: Were official communications routed or stored through infrastructure subject to U.K. law, and what security assessment was conducted before using that device to communicate with foreign leaders? ➢ Bill C-22: Why is the government demanding unprecedented oversight of Canadian telecommunications providers on national security grounds while the Prime Minister reportedly relies on a foreign telecommunications provider for his own communications? Ottawa insists foreign technology, foreign influence and foreign infrastructure pose national security concerns. Yet the Prime Minister himself reportedly chose a foreign cellphone and foreign carrier while conducting international diplomacy. Rules for thee, but not for me. The contradiction remains glaring: a Prime Minister seeking sweeping new powers over Canadians' communications while reportedly placing his own trust in a foreign telecommunications provider.

A single gigawatt of orbital compute requires roughly 200 Starship launches and Elon Musk is not satisfied with gigawatts (Save this). The target is 100 gigawatts of orbital compute per year which means SpaceX is staring down a launch requirement that no organization in human history has ever attempted at anything close to that scale. He acknowledges that scaling to gigawatts per year in orbit is a very hard challenge, but then points to something most people have missed entirely, SpaceX has already demonstrated the foundational capability, because building and launching thousands of Starlink satellites per year is the same industrial problem applied to a different payload. When you understand the orbital compute satellite as a larger version of Starlink V3 with an Nvidia GPU rack at the center instead of a communications payload, the manufacturing and launch scaling challenge stops looking like science fiction and starts looking like a production ramp. The infrastructure to support that ramp is already being built. SpaceX is currently capacitizing for thousands of launches per year, two launch towers and pads in South Texas are operational, the first pad at Cape Canaveral is nearly complete, a second is on the way at Launch Complex 37, and additional locations are already in discussion. As the CFO says it "You need to have those cost curves as you ramp up in volume and time, your costs go down." The vision he describes for what this eventually enables is striking in its specificity. He imagines asking Grok a question on his phone, the inference running on an orbital compute satellite, and the answer coming back down through Starlink direct-to-cell, a complete AI query processed entirely in space, from prompt to response, without touching a single terrestrial data center. That moment, he says, is closer than the industry thinks, with initial capability demonstrations possible as soon as next year. The bottleneck that stands between now and that moment is not the satellite design, the cooling physics, or the silicon, all of which SpaceX has already worked through.
