I took my wife on some Tesla Robotaxi and Waymo rides. She thought the Tesla Robotaxi was smoother and more comfortable than Waymo. I think it's a combination of several things (Tesla's end-to-end neural net, orders of magnitude more human driving data than Waymo, Model Y more comfortable than Jaguar I-Pace , etc). Here's a 56-minute edited video of the rides with my wife.

Even my kids know that in a world full of Tesla Robotaxis, Waymo is dunzo. It’s really not that complicated. Waymo needs expensive LiDAR, radar, cameras, specialized hardware, detailed maps, and a massive amount of infrastructure just to operate in certain areas. Tesla’s approach is completely different. Cameras are cheap. Tesla can mass-produce vehicles at a scale Waymo can’t come close to, use the same AI system across millions of cars, collect massive amounts of real-world driving data, and improve the entire fleet through software updates. That’s where the economics become almost impossible to compete with. The cheaper you can build the car, the cheaper you can operate it, and the more vehicles you can put on the road, the cheaper you can eventually make every ride. Waymo might prove Robotaxis can work. Tesla’s goal is to make them cheap enough and build enough of them to be everywhere. That’s the difference people still don’t understand. This isn’t just about who has the better Robotaxi today. It’s about who can build millions of them, drive down the cost per mile, and scale across the world. Even my kids understand the end game. Tesla Robotaxis are going to be everywhere. In the world where Tesla Robotaxis are flooded all around the world, it will very difficult for Waymo to survive.

Former head of Tesla AI Andrej Karpathy: "I personally think Tesla is ahead of Waymo. I know it doesn't look like that, but I'm still very bullish on Tesla and its self-driving program. Tesla has a software problem and Waymo has a hardware problem. Software problems are much easier; The latest (Tesla) builds, they've made really good improvements. I'm really impressed with what the team is doing. Waymo looks like it's winning right now, but I think when we look in 10 years and who's actually at scale and where most of the revenue is coming from, I still think they're (Tesla) ahead." Elon Musk: "I thought the self-driving problem would be hard, but it was harder than I thought. It's not like I thought it would be easy, I thought it would be very hard, but it was actually way harder than even that. I mean, what it comes down to at the end of the day is to solve self-driving, you basically need to recreate what humans do to drive, which is: humans drive with optical sensors (eyes) and biological neural nets. That's how the entire road system is designed to work, So for actually for full self-driving to work, we have to recreate that in digital form."

American is in a self driving Waymo When he got in he realized the estimated time to his destination is way longer than it should be The Waymo is taking him in opposite directions, is circling random parking lots and won’t listen to him He’s calling support form inside the Waymo and the only option they have is to have him get out and book an Uber and they’ll refund him But now he’s in the middle of nowhere on a highway…. It was only supposed to take 7 minutes to get home but the trip is now 40+ minutes in the Waymo…. And now they want him to just get out and book an Uber At the end of the video he shows the Waymo vehicle screen, there is another 28 minutes until her gets to his destination He says he won’t be taking another driverless vehicle. I agree, I wouldn’t get into a Waymo either Rumor has it he’s still in the Waymo…..

Day 3. Finished 5 Tesla Robotaxi rides, 4 Waymo rides, and 1 Uber ride. (See 39-minute edited video below.) Uber is in a tough situation. Classic innovators dilemma. Autonomous ride-hailing clearly is the future, but if Uber invites Waymo then that's working against their human drivers which will hurt Uber's recruiting ability (which they need to keep density especially in suburban areas). But if they don't welcome Waymo, then Uber is toast because people want cheaper/autonomous ride-hailing. Also, if Uber welcomes Waymo and Waymo cars increase then Waymo can just bypass Uber with their own Waymo app. Uber's only "hope" would be if multiple autonomous driving companies come online soon and Uber becomes the ride-hailing marketplace for them. But I think this is unlikely. Autonomous driving is just a really hard problem to solve, and with data and network effects. I think it's a winner-takes-most market. We'll see. But the more I take Tesla's Robotaxi, the more I think it's smoother and better than Waymo. And the more I take Waymo, the more I get pessimistic about Uber's long-term future.

Waymo’s Co-CEO was asked to respond to Tesla using strictly Computer Vision & AI rather than LiDAR: “You have to be able to see at night. You have to have this vision that is better than humans. What we’re doing is replacing humans. We’re not asking you to sit behind the wheel and take over the vehicle at a very vulnerable moment.” The Tesla Robotaxi network can’t come soon enough.
