As expected, Tesla’s Model Y ride-hailing service in the Bay Area currently has a safety driver in the driver’s seat, which is why Tesla is calling it a ride-hailing service rather than a Robotaxi service. It is still a paid service though and is likely using the same software as the Austin Robotaxis. Once Tesla receives the required permit, they will remove the safety driver and instead have a safety monitor in the passenger seat like they do in Austin. That could happen within the next 1–2 months, according to Elon.

First time Tesla Robotaxi rides for Wendy who flew in from Seattle to try it out & possibly move permanently to Austin! She was worried about being nervous in the Robotaxi but after 3 rides felt it was so good it was boring in a great way! She also thinks this service in general, and Tesla AI FSD specifically could be a huge help to people like her mother. Check it out!

Here is my experience (in 4K) from earlier today in one of the world's first ever public Tesla Robotaxi rides in Austin, Texas with FSD Unsupervised! No-one is in the driver seat and the safety monitor in the passenger seat does not have a steering or pedals. It was awesome.

Naibel Benavides should still be alive. Tesla Autopilot killed her because it was engaged on a road that Tesla knew it wasn't safe on. The NTSB ordered Tesla to restrict Autopilot use to the freeways it was designed for in 2016 and again in 2019 after two fatal crashes with cross traffic. Tesla ignored them and more people were killed. In 2023 NHTSA recalled Autopilot for this same problem. Tesla claimed to have fixed the issue. Tesla lied. Even today, Autopilot can be engaged on any road with lane markings. More people will be killed because of this. Elon Musk's callous indifference to human life is sickening. He should not be allowed anywhere near safety critical software.

Tesla now has 72 robotaxi in Austin. This is twice as much as 2 weeks ago and 22 were added in the last 3 days. There are 232 cars in Austin and the Bay Area. Only 137 different license plates for Waymos have been seen in Austin. Tesla can pass Waymo in number of cars in Austin. Tesla has registered 1655 cars in the Bay Area. Tesla can add those cars and they have over 700 registered drivers if they wanted to to deploy cars with safety drivers. However, I argue the following: • Tesla likely has a 4-5 year lead in generalized autonomous driving. • Tesla has millions of vehicles that could be potentially deployed into a Robotaxi network once unsupervised FSD is ready. • With a large supply of cars offering quick rides at cheaper prices than Uber and Lyft (no human driver), Tesla's robotaxi network will be extremely difficult to compete against. • Newcomers entering the market years later will struggle to match Tesla's supply density, competitive pricing, and demand, even in a single city. In other words, Tesla’s first mover advantage in the Robotaxi market will likely be very significant and the resulting network effects will make it extremely difficult to compete with for future newcomers to the Robotaxi market.
