Tesla just rewrote its compiler and runtime from the ground up using MLIR for FSD with v14.3 and I'm guessing ~90% of you can't explain what that means. Since this video received much praise, I'm sharing it here. Even if you've already seen it, don't be afraid to share...

So with every new release now we should see fewer annoying older habits come back?

@JoeTegtmeyer One of the most important attributes of Chris Lattner that you didn’t mention is that he’s an Apple Alumni and inventor of the Swift language and LLVM. He’s one of the top compiler guys on the planet.

People are most frustrated about the constant delays, lack of communication, and missed deadlines.

Doesn't matter you can break it down in the most eloquent of ways but at the end of the day this puts a major delay in unsupervised and likely cybercab rollout another 6+ months if we're lucky.

What it means, like pretty much everything Tesla, they make some progress on some tech, like Dojo, Optimus or FSD, don't meet Pedolf's fantasy hype, he fires most of the team or they leave because of his bullying, and new guys are ordered to start again. Complete clusterfuck.😂🤣

@Xil_llix This version, 14.3, will not be deployed to and does not run on Hardware 3 (HW3) vehicles…

Dillon, the reason they adopted MLIR is that HW4 has a memory problem. June 2025 "Have to be super frugal with memory bandwidth", Jan 2026 "AI5 is existential". V14 is still small model because large model doesn't fit. V15 will require AI5 in 2027 and will delay Robotaxi

@grok, what is MLIR?

This is great speculation. If the compiler was the "big feature", Tesla could have communicated that. There is fatigue from, "[the next model] will be the big break". Too many missed release estimates. More clear communication would thwart the negative sentiments.

"You can either produce excellence or you can avoid criticism. But you cannot do both of those. The reason that you don't have certain excellence that you want is because you are afraid of getting criticized. You are afraid of the judgment that comes with it. You are afraid of standing out. You are afraid of being alone. You are afraid of people looking at you. You are worried about what people think of you. There are 2 categories of things in this world: 1) Things that are up to you 2) Things that are not up to you Which category does your reputation sit in? Your reputation is not up to you. I'm the one who associates your reputation with something, not you. You just do things. What's up to you? How you act. Your decisions. Your actions. That is up to you. Your reputation is not up to you. Here's how I know that: You all have a reputation about me and it's not in my control. I get to say and do whatever I say and do up here. I am in control of saying it. I am in control of doing it. The moment words leave my lips, who has control over what is done with those words? You! You are in control of what you think of me. And there's no way everybody in this room is going to think the exact same thing about me. No way. When it comes to exceptional, what we've got to understand is you can spend your whole life trying to avoid criticism and earn reputation, and it still won't be in your control. We can waste a lot of time missing out on excellence we could have been producing if we were just simply LESS trying to engineer what we wanted other people to think about us."
