Uber CEO on Tesla using Camera Vision over LiDAR: “I think in the near-term it’s going to be very difficult, and Elon Musk would tell me I’m wrong, and never bet against him, but it’s my instinct — in the near-term it’s going to be very difficult to build a camera only product that has superhuman level of safety. Will it be possible? Quite possibly yes. If you can have instrumentations that include cameras and LiDAR ; the cost of Solid State LiDAR is only $400-$500— WHY NOT include LiDAR as well in order to achieve superhuman safety. So, possible? Yeah it will be — I don’t know when, but is possible the better product? I’m not sure. Tesla Full Self-Driving continues to completely give up when the sun shines into the windshield at a certain angle and with sprinkles of shade. Yes, the camera behind the camera housing was cleaned by Tesla. No my window isn’t dirty. No, I’m not the only one experiencing this. It happens with HW3 and HW4 vehicles.

We take the same approach with our vehicles, which is a digital neural net and cameras. I expect this approach to ultimately be at least an order of magnitude safer than humans driving. It is quite magical because the car feels like it is sentient. It actually feels like it’s alive and you can actually, as we improve the software, feel the sentience growing in the car. We already have some vehicles operating with no people inside with no safety monitors in three cities in Texas and probably will be widespread in the US by the end of this year and hopefully in Israel too" Tesla FSD is beginning to feel more and more sentient with each update, it’s incredible. The self-driving problem is not a sensor problem, it’s an AI problem. The cameras have enough information already. It’s a problem of extracting the information, which is an AI problem.” - Ashok Elluswamy, VP of AI at Tesla. Just like us humans, we drive with eyes, we walk with eyes, literally we do everything with our eyes. We don’t have lidar spinning and laser beams on our heads. We simply see the world and our brain figures it out… all from vision. For so many years, the industry treated autonomy like it was a hardware problem. Like “if cameras struggle, just add more sensors.” That’s exactly how companies like Waymo ended up with sensor towers that look like crazy science projects. So ugly btw too… That approach might have made sense in 2008, but not today! Bc back then, AI wasn’t good enough to truly understand the world. So engineers had no choice but to lean on lidar and radar for help. But today, cameras capture insane amounts of information, I’m talking billions of pixels every second. The thing that was missing was AI intelligence. And when AI can understand why a car is slowing or why a pedestrian is hesitating, or real world things, you just need a better brain instead of more sensors. And now, everyone else is realizing this… the future of autonomy was always about understanding the world through vision, just like we humans do. That’s the bet that Elon and Tesla made early on… he was already years ahead of everyone, when everyone was doubling down on LiDAR and radar, even when so many people mocked them for switching early.
