Tesla’s Robotaxi concept definitely sounds like a game changer. The combination of 24/7 service, automated cleaning, and Supercharger integration could offer a level of convenience and efficiency that’s hard to match. The ability to automatically route cars for cleaning and charging means more rides, less downtime, and happier customers. It really puts pressure on competitors who lack a similar infrastructure. If Tesla can pull this off, it could seriously disrupt the ride-hailing industry and set a new standard for service quality.

Other autonomy providers bolt on their own sensors, with their owning cleaning. Tesla integrates it all together. The same wipers that clean the windshield also clean the front cameras. If you’re Waymo, how do you even go about reprogramming the windshield wiper routine for all the different car brands and models you run on? You don’t, you create a separate cleaning system for your own sensors. Tesla makes the car. They make the software that runs on the car. They control all the parts. They run the ride share service. They own the charging network. They own the service network. And they are making all of it fit together to deliver the best, the simplest, and the most elegant autonomy solution. Interesting edge case with Tesla Robotaxi today. As Ellie in Space 🚀💫 and I were arriving at our drop off, a thunderstorm was nearby and support contacted us to say the service needed to pause until the storm passed. Problem was we were in an open park with no cover. We had to end the ride, get out and then resume on the car. Problem was we got a high demand please try again message on the app. The support had to reset the system to allow us to by pass the high demand and then we immediately got another Robotaxi before the rain hit. This is due to the early stage of Robotaxi and the level of caution Tesla is using at the moment.

Even my kids know that in a world full of Tesla Robotaxis, Waymo is dunzo. It’s really not that complicated. Waymo needs expensive LiDAR, radar, cameras, specialized hardware, detailed maps, and a massive amount of infrastructure just to operate in certain areas. Tesla’s approach is completely different. Cameras are cheap. Tesla can mass-produce vehicles at a scale Waymo can’t come close to, use the same AI system across millions of cars, collect massive amounts of real-world driving data, and improve the entire fleet through software updates. That’s where the economics become almost impossible to compete with. The cheaper you can build the car, the cheaper you can operate it, and the more vehicles you can put on the road, the cheaper you can eventually make every ride. Waymo might prove Robotaxis can work. Tesla’s goal is to make them cheap enough and build enough of them to be everywhere. That’s the difference people still don’t understand. This isn’t just about who has the better Robotaxi today. If our analysis is correct, those costs as Robotaxi scales are going to drop to $0.25 per mile. The cost of transportation is going to collapse. Day 3. Finished 5 Tesla Robotaxi rides, 4 Waymo rides, and 1 Uber ride. (See 39-minute edited video below.) Uber is in a tough situation. Classic innovators dilemma. Autonomous ride-hailing clearly is the future, but if Uber invites Waymo then that's working against their human drivers which will hurt Uber's recruiting ability (which they need to keep density especially in suburban areas). But if they don't welcome Waymo, then Uber is toast because people want cheaper/autonomous ride-hailing. Also, if Uber welcomes Waymo and Waymo cars increase then Waymo can just bypass Uber with their own Waymo app. Uber's only "hope" would be if multiple autonomous driving companies come online soon and Uber becomes the ride-hailing marketplace for them. But I think this is unlikely. Autonomous driving is just a really hard problem to solve, and with data and network effects. I think it's a winner-takes-most market. We'll see. But the more I take Tesla's Robotaxi, the more I think it's smoother and better than Waymo. And the more I take Waymo, the more I get pessimistic about Uber's long-term future.

1 Year Anniversary of Tesla Tesla Robotaxi Launch ... Reliving that 1st day! One year ago a small group or people including me received an invitation from Tesla_AI to be among the first to participate in the launch of the Tesla Robotaxi service. The launch took place in Austin Texas on 22 June 2025 and was punctuated by a lot of excitement, some uncertainty or what to expect, waiting for the app to download and then hailing the first ride as the small group of participants faced out in the initial service area and waited for their Robotaxi to arrive! For this initial launch, Tesla used Model Y's with the "Robotaxi" logos on the doors and rear hatch and had supervisors in the passenger seat but the cars all drove autonomously and did exceptionally well. We had all kinds of media trailing behind trying to get images, interviews or any information about our experiences, and this made for a surreal day, almost like paparazzi chasing after high-profile celebrities. Over the next year, the Robotaxi service would slowly scale to new cities, initially Austin and the San Fransisco areas, and then later to Houston and Dallas while preparations for several more cities were underway. The fleet did scale up but slowly, going through several revisions and updates of the autonomous software, becoming fully unsupervised and the fleet management aspects of the Robotaxi service were further developed. Regulatory permits and filings also took place to position the Robotaxi service for what we all hope will be large-scale expansion including the addition of the new Cybercabs, which are now in limited production and are testing multiple locations around the US. What will year 2 be like for Robotaxi? All indications are a very big year, but ultimately, Tesla needs to demonstrate they can execute on their plans, preparations and Cybercab production. When Elon Musk and Tesla let me, and millions of other owners, add our own cars to the Tesla Robotaxi network via a software update, it’s going to be the greatest wealth CREATION in human history. I get it. For the first time ever, a Tesla will become an $ income producing asset bc your Tesla will be able to drive itself while you’re sleeping, working, or even on vacation. This is NOT a sci-fi idea anymore. Elon has been clear for years. The hardware is already in the cars and the thing that will unlock this is going to be software. Here’s a simple version of how it’s going to work imo: 1/ A software update turns your Tesla into a robotaxi 2/ You opt in with one tap in the Tesla app 3/ Your car gives rides when you’re not using it 4/ Tesla takes a cut, you keep the rest 5/ You can pull your car out anytime, you have full control Think Airbnb, but for cars. Now on the $ generation side, this is where it can get a bit wild. Elon has said a high use robotaxi could generate ~$30,000 per year per car, and even more in busy cities. That means, 1/ A car payment pays for itself 2/ A car can become your own business 3/ And for some people, this can allow them to become financially free Elon even said robotaxi earnings should far exceed monthly car payments... this will completely flip how we think about owning a vehicle. A lot of long time Tesla investors call this the “greatest wealth transfer in history”… Elon corrected that and said something important: “Not transfer of wealth, CREATION of wealth. The pie gets much bigger.” And I believe he’s right. Autonomy makes transportation cheaper, safer, and available 24/7. When Elon Musk and Tesla let me, and millions of other owners, add our own cars to the Tesla Robotaxi network via a software update, it’s going to be the greatest wealth CREATION in human history. I get it. For the first time ever, a Tesla will become an $ income producing asset bc your Tesla will be able to drive itself while you’re sleeping, working, or even on vacation. This is NOT a sci-fi idea anymore. Elon has been clear for years. The hardware is already in the cars and the thing that will unlock this is going to be software. Here’s a simple version of how it’s going to work imo: 1/ A software update turns your Tesla into a robotaxi 2/ You opt in with one tap in the Tesla app 3/ Your car gives rides when you’re not using it 4/ Tesla takes a cut, you keep the rest 5/ You can pull your car out anytime, you have full control Think Airbnb, but for cars. Now on the $ generation side, this is where it can get a bit wild. Elon has said a high use robotaxi could generate ~$30,000 per year per car, and even more in busy cities. That means, 1/ A car payment pays for itself 2/ A car can become your own business 3/ And for some people, this can allow them to become financially free Elon even said robotaxi earnings should far exceed monthly car payments... this will completely flip how we think about owning a vehicle. Many people see Waymo and think they’re ahead of everyone in the autonomous driving race. After all, they’re giving out over 100,000 paid robotaxi rides a week across cities like San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles with a fleet of 700 vehicles, and on the surface, it could seem like they’re dominating. However, each Waymo costs $100,000 due to the complex, expensive hardware that’s in use. And due to this, they’re losing money on every single ride. For Waymo, scaling this business up means higher costs, and I don’t think it’s a sustainable model, even if the company keeps pouring $ into it. Now, look at Tesla. With a fleet closing in on 7 million vehicles worldwide, Tesla is playing a different game. Instead of relying on bulky, expensive hardware, Tesla uses a much simpler, more cost-effective approach, just 8 or 9 cameras and a powerful AI neural net. This AI, constantly learning from millions of real-world miles, means Tesla’s software gets smarter every day and can be scaled across the globe without needing new hardware for every car. So, while Waymo might seem like it’s leading the charge today, in my eyes, Tesla is quietly preparing to take over the entire field. They’ve created the foundation for something far bigger and is why I believe the true leader in Robotaxis will be Tesla, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it unfold on 10/10!
