How to drop and receive an anchor As the boat drifts or is gently reversed, the anchor’s flukes (sharp points) dig into the seabed. This process is called “setting” the anchor. Once set, the anchor holds the boat in place by creating resistance against the seabed. The weight of the chain also helps by lying on the seabed and providing additional holding power. To retrieve the anchor, you pull the boat directly above it and lift it vertically. This reduces the resistance and allows the anchor to come free.
