A study published today shows we have an average of 4.9 million cases annually, which is a large number, and 7000 to 8000 people die each year due to inadequate treatment. For many years, our primary treatment involved a drug called fluoroquinolone. However, as this drug has been widely misused, typhoid has become resistant to it. Consequently, patients often do not recover, and the illness persists. Many deaths occur among patients with fluoroquinolone-resistant typhoid... We lack proper testing here, and the issue is that no reliable typhoid tests are available on the market... The only approved test is the 'blood culture,' but it is often ineffective if the patient has already taken antibiotics... Sometimes typhoid recurs, necessitating hospitalisation. Hence, it is important to accurately diagnose and treat typhoid..." She adds, "...If typhoid is not fully cured, it can stay in your body and lead to recurring episodes. Many of our patients experience recurrent typhoid...
