๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡น 1983 Niki Lauda Mclaren Tag Test ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช Porsche Weissach Development Centre test track On the 29th of June 1983, a significant "roll-out" took place at the Weissach test track. While Niki Lauda was heavily involved in the development and lobbying for the engine's early introduction, it was John Watson who conducted the initial shakedown of the McLaren-TAG (the MP4/1D "test hack") at the facility. The "Test Hack": Before the full MP4/1E race car debuted, the team used modified chassis to accommodate the TTE-PO1 V6 engine. Porsche and McLaren had different philosophies initially; Porsche preferred testing in a 956 sports prototype, whereas McLaren insisted on testing in an F1 chassis to accurately simulate the demands of the engine. Niki Lauda was instrumental in pushing for the engine to be raced as soon as possible. He believed that no amount of testing could replicate the specific pressures and stresses of a Grand Prix weekend. His persistence, coupled with his lobbying of sponsors like Marlboro, forced the team to accelerate the development of the MP4/1E. The shift from the naturally aspirated Cosworth DFY to the Porsche-built V6 turbo was dramatic. Drivers like Lauda were struck by the "incredible" power deliveryโ€”which he famously likened to being "hit from behind by a bomb"โ€”and the newfound smoothness compared to the vibrations of the V8. This accelerated development path led to the car's race debut at the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort in August 1983, just two months after the Weissach tests. While photos from that June 1983 day at Weissach are well-documented (often featuring Hans Mezger and the McLaren mechanics working alongside Porsche technicians), the test served as the foundation for the 1984 season, where McLaren and the TAG-Porsche engine would go on to win 12 of 16 races, securing a period of unparalleled success. ๐ŸŽฅ Formula 1 McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team #porsche #germany #lauda #motorsport
