While Niki Lauda was heavily involved in the development and lobbying for the engine's early introduction, it was John Watson who conducted the initial shakedown of the McLaren-TAG (the MP4/1D "test hack") at the facility. The "Test Hack": Before the full MP4/1E race car debuted, the team used modified chassis to accommodate the TTE-PO1 V6 engine.
