So when Shane got reanimated as a zombie, Rick would pick up Shane’s gun, pull the trigger, and hear only a click. “Shane never had any ammo in his gun,” Bernthal explained. “He brought Rick out there to make Rick kill him.” “He knew he was a danger to the group, and he knew he had to die, but he couldn't do it himself. He wanted to force Rick to become the man that could protect Lori and the baby.”
