Jon Bernthal says he and Andrew Lincoln pitched a very different version of Shane’s death in ‘The Walking Dead’ but showrunners ultimately turned it down. Bernthal imagined Shane putting a gun to Rick’s head and delivering the same speech: “You come back here and you destroy everything!” Shane would have dared Rick to kill him, and Rick would stab Shane in the heart, and as Shane died, Rick would tell him: “You did this to us, Shane! This was you!” The twist came after Shane reanimated. In his version, Rick discards his weapon during their argument, refusing to fight. So when Shane got reanimated as a zombie, Rick would pick up Shane’s gun, pull the trigger, and hear only a click. “Shane never had any ammo in his gun,” Bernthal explained. “He brought Rick out there to make Rick kill him.” “He knew he was a danger to the group, and he knew he had to die, but he couldn't do it himself. He wanted to force Rick to become the man that could protect Lori and the baby.”
