This was the same resolution commonly used by CRT TVs and many 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit home consoles. Happy birthday, Bubble Bobble! It was released exactly 40 years ago today, on June 16, 1986. The arcade version was absolutely brilliant, being one of the first games to have a coop-multiplayer option. It was also one of the the most ported arcade games in history, with over 20 ports to home computers and consoles, including even the legendary TI-84 Plus (primarily a calculator). The port that got the highest praise and came closest to the original arcade experience was the C64 version. Excellent graphics, one of the most recognizable tunes , and great gameplay make Bubble Bobble a timeless classic. My brother and I played the crap out of this one back in the day, and we still load it up on my old C64 when he comes for a visit. It's like riding a bike, you never forget how to play Bubble Bobble.

If you played Capcom arcade games in the ’90s, you probably remember seeing the Q Sound logo during the opening screens. Back then, I was really curious about what it actually meant, but there was no easy way to find out. I finally understood it years later after buying a Capcom Q GrandAm 25 cabinet. Most standard arcade cabinets simply output the mono sound signal from JAMMA directly without a dedicated amplifier. But this cabinet came with a separate amp designed specifically for stereo input. Because of that, when you connect the stereo outputs from CPS1.5, CPS2, or CPS3 boards to the amp, the sound becomes much richer and more immersive. What impressed me the most was that this cabinet lets you switch between Q Sound and regular mono audio, so I could compare them directly. The stereo sound definitely feels more spacious and cleaner. But the biggest difference comes from the speaker box mounted at the top. It’s made of wood and has a much larger internal space, so the audio quality is on a completely different level compared to the cheap speakers used in ordinary arcade cabinets.

As I got deeper into collecting arcade games, I eventually acquired the Model 1, Model 2, and Model 3 boards that powered the Virtua Fighter series. Unlike most arcade hardware, these systems are incredibly large and complex, which made it difficult to enjoy them properly. I’m probably the only crazy person in the world who would build something like this. 😆 I always wanted to create a setup that would let me use them more conveniently, and after years of planning, I finally built a Model board selector. Out of all the custom projects I’ve made, this is the one I’m most attached to, and it’s also the one I use the most. A lot of people ask how I built it or whether I’d be willing to sell one, but it’s extremely complicated to make and surprisingly expensive. Because of that, I’ve only ever built a single unit. I’m probably the only crazy person in the world who would build something like this.
