The 6.9 M-class solar flare produced a nice coronal shockwave. It's possible there is more to come, this main cluster of sunspots is perfectly centered today to launch big solar storms our way should they choose.

Today (02/02/26 UTC) we had one of the strongest solar flares of the 21st century, a combined 8.1, 1.5, and 2.8 x-class solar flare sequence that is still ongoing at m-class levels. FLASHING LIGHT WARNING FOR SENSITIVE VIEWERS.

Here's the solar activity of the last ~40 hours. Two big flares (M5.8, X1.1) and basically continuous low-grade m-class activity now from 4479. Check the broad coronal loops of 4478 though connecting wide across its surroundings. It's clearly holding back a lot of latent energy and plasma and if it pops off we could potentially witness a major solar flare event (X5.0+)

On November 27 and 28, a series of powerful solar flares swept across the Sun’s surface, creating this coronal hole. This phenomenon is a temporary region of relatively cool, less dense plasma in the solar corona where the Sun's magnetic field extends into interplanetary space as an open field. The open magnetic field of a coronal hole allows solar wind to escape into space at a much quicker rate, leading to increased chances of geomagnetic storms upon colliding with Earth’s magnetosphere.

.NASA, NOAA , and the Solar Cycle Prediction Panel have officially declared that the solar maximum has begun. This marks the peak of the Sun's 11-year activity cycle, characterized by frequent sunspots, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections. The solar maximum brings increased solar activity, which can cause geomagnetic storms affecting Earth’s power grids, communications, and satellites but also leads to beautiful auroras. Scientists cannot predict the exact timing or strength of solar cycles with precision. The Sun's magnetic poles will eventually switch places, and the activity will decrease, but the exact peak of this cycle may not be known for months or years. Although this cycle is stronger than initial predictions, it remains within normal limits. The most powerful flare of this cycle occurred on October 4, 2024, but wasn't the strongest ever recorded. 👉

The Sun is absolutely COOKING right now. 1 X-flare and 10 M-flares in less than 16 hours, and this still looks like preliminary activity to stronger solar flares and big coronal mass ejections as active region 4366 has grown significantly since my last update. BOOMSHAKALAKA!!

A whole train of big #solarstorms are on their way, along with some smaller storms hitting now, and some fast solar wind! It is an #aurora photographers dream starting now and lasting at least through the weekend. Right now, the biggest of the storms should hit late Thursday or early Friday morning and is well-represented in NOAA's prediction model. You can also get a 3D view of the coming solar storm in my earlier post. G3 to G4 storm levels are possible by Friday.

A large trans-equatorial hole (dark region) is on the Sun and will blast Earth with high-speed solar wind after connecting to our planet with its magnetic field. Additionally some interesting activity from a sunspot group (4334) just below the coronal hole. Two big shockwave explosions but no CMEs launched outwards according to coronagraph imagery.

X FLARE IN PROGRESS - 3RD LARGEST THIS CYCLE: Sunspot region AR3663 (again) just produced an X4.5 flare which is the 3rd largest since the beginning of solar cycle 25 (4.3 years ago). It was a long duration event which is usually associated with a CME: bad time to be without SOHO

Here is a 3D visualization of the coming solar storm using model parameters from NASA's run, NOAA's run (shown below), and the coronagraph views from STEREO-A/COR2 and SOHO/LASCO. The storm is expected to hit Earth early December 9. The 3D visualization clearly shows the low inclination orientation of the solar slinky core inside the larger storm envelope. Of course, the earlier eruption that erupted to the northeast, might deflect this structure a little bit, but likely that will only make the structure move more towards the ecliptic plane, which will give us a larger chance of crossing through the solar slinky core. One nice thing about low inclination flux rope cores is that they almost ALWAYS have southward field in them at some point. So this is good news for aurora photographers-- as long as this solar storm stays true to its launch trajectory and inclination, we could see some organized southward pointed magnetic field. Considering this solar storm is fast-- that usually indicates the storm will not deviate much from its original launch trajectory! Here is the link to a static frame of the 3D frame visualization so you can fly around it yourself:

A negative polarity trans-equatorial coronal hole is visible on the Sun and will connect to Earth with its magnetic field and high-speed solar wind in ~5-6 days. The last geoeffective coronal hole high-speed-stream impact we had perfectly lined up with the Venezuela earthquake doublet (M7.2 & M7.2) and the M7.2 earthquake that hit Japan on June 24th... With the last 2 weeks being dominated by intense solar flare activity, Earth's ionosphere and global electric circuit is already very highly charged, which suggests that this CH HSS impact could act as a stronger trigger than normal upon critically stressed faults. That said, the coronal hole isn't very wide, so Earth won't be embedded in its solar wind for long. Initial forecast range for a significant bump in global seismic activity from this would be July 9-14th.
