MAINSTREAM MEDIA CALLED IT RECKLESS, SOUTH AFRICA CALLS IT TRADITION🚨 Two Airlink Embraers roared over DHL Stadium before the Springboks beat the All Blacks yesterday and what happened? The internet exploded with unbelievable keyboard warrior analysis, “too low, dangerous, could have been catastrophic” and a whole lot more. What all these “critics” and keyboard analysts don’t know or perhaps have forgotten, South African pilots have been doing this for decades. In 1995 at Ellis Park, Captain Laurie Kay flew “Lebombo”, a Boeing 747 low over a packed World Cup final stadium. Remember what was painted on the underwings and belly of the Jumbo jet? “GOOD LUCK BOKKE” In Cape Town yesterday was the same tradition, not a stunt cooked up for wows, views and clicks but to give the Bokke power and good luck but let’s see what these “critics” skipped: ▪️SA Civil Aviation Authority approved ▪️Three senior captains in each cockpit ▪️Planned altitude and speed of 150 knots planned ▪️Flight data was inside the approved limits ▪️Pilots are trained in some of the world’s harshest weather conditions, Cape southeaster winds, highveld thunderstorms, mountain waves and short African runways ▪️The 40ft clearance over the roof was tight and spectacular but not illegal and certainly without improvisation A packed stadium with fireworks doing their magic and two crews who executed a brief that takes planning most keyboard experts will never see is called skill, it’s also called pride. If your first instinct is panic instead of precision, you are not watching aviation, you are watching a camera angle which can be misleading. Let’s praise the crews for this spectacular show and always remember Laurie Kay, the fine top class pilot who started this. Stop treating excellence like a crime guys, it’s not.
