We are back at it with forward module testing, gearing up for New Glenn’s second flight. Part of this testing campaign is to activate the hydrogen peroxide system that fuels our Reaction Control System, or RCS. The GS1 RCS provides 20,000 lbf thrust in any direction, allowing the first stage to reorient itself in space before re-entry and to precisely target Jacklyn in high winds during landing. To give you an idea, a single F-18 Super Hornet F414 engine provides a similar amount of thrust at 22,000 lbf, so you can see how powerful this system is. The RCS performed nominally during our NG-1 flight and successfully reoriented GS1 to within 0.5 deg of our target attitude during exo-atmospheric flight.

A P-8A “Poseidon” Anti-Submarine and Surveillance Aircraft with the U.S. Navy’s Patrol Squadron Four (VP-4) out of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington, is reported to have Overshot the Runway today at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu resulting in the Aircraft to Crash in the Ocean right off the end of the Runway; the 9 Crewmembers onboard were able to Swim to Shore and were not Injured during the Incident.

Neil Armstrong’s Apollo 11 Hand Controllers 55 years ago today, the mighty Saturn V roared to life and launched Apollo 11 skyward. Neil Armstrong sat in the left seat with this translational controller T-handle in his left hand and this rotational controller at his right — the control joysticks for the spacecraft. But the left handle has a special function at launch: if catastrophe struck on the pad or during ascent, a counterclockwise crank of the handle would initiate the solid rocket engines in the red escape tower, pulling the Command Module away from the rest of the rocket, to return separately by parachute. For the entirely of the Apollo program, that handle was never twisted, even on Apollo 12 when lighting strikes disabled the entire control deck of the Command Module and lit up almost all of the alarms. The user interface continues to the present day, with a similar T-handle at the center of the SpaceX Dragon display deck. The handle felt the same to me, with a similar twist to the left. In the final photos, you see the translational and rotational controllers that flanked Neil Armstrong on Apollo 11. They were removed from the Command Module post flight as with each of the Apollo missions, and after decades in storage, discarded as waste in 1985. They have had several owners since then, and if I can obtain the third controller, I intend to reunite the lot with their spacecraft by donating them to the Smithsonian.

Glimpse into the eruptive vents at Kīlauea summit as we await the start of episode 50 of lava fountaining. This video was taken during a misty USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory monitoring overflight on June 24, with views accompanied by a rainbow (ānuenue). • Aerial views into the north and south vents show them steadily emitting volcanic gases. Magma is visible roiling within the bifurcated interior of the north vent. • With permission from Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, USGS scientists briefly landed on Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor to collect warm lava samples from episode 49, which will provide data on magma chemistry and underground storage conditions. • The onset of episode 50 of lava fountaining at Kīlauea summit is likely between June 25 and June 27, with June 26 most likely.
