Only 1 out of every 4 Chicago Public Schools students can read at grade level, and only 17% are proficient in math. Since 2019, CPS’s budget has grown by more than 57% to over $9 billion, yet there has been no significant improvement in test scores. Just 21% of students in Chicago can read and do math at an eighth-grade proficiency level. At Douglas Academy High School, which has the capacity for more than 900 students, only 34 were enrolled in 2024. The school spent $68,091 per student, 3x the average, yet failed to produce a single student proficient in either math or English at grade level.

An 8th grade math teacher approached me to highlight the unjustly high property tax burden where he lives, yet he also noted that the schools are failing to teach students how to do basic math. The education system is failing & I gave him my word we’re going to fix it.
