I want to speak directly to San Francisco’s public-school parents and our students. I know many of you are worried about the possibility of a teacher strike that could temporarily close schools—and I want you to hear this clearly from me: our kids come first. As mayor, even though I don’t oversee our school district, I’m deeply committed to making sure our kids get a world-class education—with safe public schools where kids can learn and educators are well supported. It is crucial that our schools remain open. Every day in the classroom matters. I have been in regular contact with both the school district and the teachers union, and I am urging them to keep talking so kids can keep learning. Our working parents can’t afford to stay home if schools are closed. Our special needs students can’t afford to lose access to vital services that help them succeed. Schools are the foundation that makes daily life possible and helps every family in San Francisco thrive. I am also actively working with city departments to ensure we have options for our students in the event that classrooms do close. Would you want to be a teacher on your staff as a principal? I have often asked teachers, would you want to be a learner in your own classroom, but the question above for administrators could be even more critical. If we do not support those closest to students every day in an effective manner, it is much harder for things to improve in schools. If we want learning to look different in classrooms, then leadership must also evolve. This doesn’t mean that everything done in the past has been wrong. Some things that mattered 50 years ago will matter now, both in learning and leadership. But replicating everything that was done in the past, whether it was effective or not, isn’t a great strategy for moving schools forward. I was blessed to learn from some amazing principals in my career, but I also learned about things that I hated as a teacher and swore that I would do my best not to replicate those strategies. I wrote this in my upcoming book co-authored with Allyson Apsey (Allyson Apsey) titled, “What Makes a Great Principal”: “If we do things in our schools and classrooms that were done hundreds of years ago that still work today, we should continue to do them. On the other hand, if we do new stuff just because it is new, but it doesn’t work, we shouldn’t be doing it. Whatever works for our community is where our focus should be, no matter when it originated.” What worked in the past? What would you change? What would you have wanted as a teacher, and how can you make that happen? Simply replicating the strategies of the past, whether good or bad, will not necessarily lead education to a better future. Innovation is crucial to leadership as much as it is to teaching and learning.

Buttigieg: It is not too much to ask that, in this country and in this state, one job ought to be enough, which means wages and benefits that make that possible. It’s not too much to ask that you ought to be able to afford to raise a family in this country—to put your kid in child care if you want, or stay home and take care of them yourselves if you want, or do some combination of that if you want—and still have it add up at the end of the month. It is not too much to ask that the wealthiest country in the world have the best health care in the world and that it have the best-funded public schools in the world. And it is not too much to ask that the largest corporations and wealthiest people in this country pay at least as much of their income and wealth in taxes as a schoolteacher, a bus driver, or a firefighter. It is not too much to ask for a different kind of politics, where you look at your leaders in action and actually feel your blood pressure come down a little bit instead of going through the roof. That is a reasonable thing to expect of our leaders. It is not too much to ask. We can do this. Most of us already want this. So the obvious question is: Why hasn’t it happened? And that’s where we’ve got to talk about the system that we’re living with, which, by the way, as a politician, they kind of tell you not to do. Consultants say, “Look, no one’s going to get too fired up about the details of our democratic system when they’re just trying to keep their heads above water in this economy,” which I get, and to some extent I agree. But the reason that so many things are wrong with our economic picture is that so many things are wrong with our political system. And we’ve gotten so used to it, we can forget that there was a time when our political system was the pride of this nation. Wars have been fought for our system, starting with the first one—the one that launched 250 years ago with the Declaration of Independence, the one that gave this nation its being. The Founders risked their lives for a better political system. So don’t tell me it can’t stir people’s hearts. Don’t tell me that it’s not worth fighting for. Especially because until we do something to change our political system, we will continue to suffer from an economic system that lets us down: monopolies squeezing families and farmers on both ends; consumers and workers caught up in a system that can’t serve them; small businesses swamped by the big guys. Right now, what’s at stake is nothing less than the American dream. It is endangered.

🚨 Heads up, Utah — this is not okay. 🚨 The UEA is creating an “Equity Ambassador” program for teachers to “advance racial and social justice work in public schools.” They are pushing to lead "systemic change" on how and what our kids are being taught. Our children deserve classrooms devoted to learning — math, science, reading, writing, history, etc. — not political indoctrination. And this is just part of a larger national issue. As a father of an educator, I know this is not who our teachers are, so why are we letting the union take control? ❗️Let me be blunt: Schools are for education, not agendas. There are always so many negative comments about teachers. Let me show you a small glimpse into the heart of a teacher. This gentleman has a complete breakfast set up for his kids that come in hungry each morning. Bought and paid for out of his own pocket! He also has lunch items and snacks if needed. This isn’t’t in our job description, but it is written on our hearts. You have no idea how many times we feed our students because we see the need. Not for accolades, but simply because our students deserved to be fed. While I’m at it, let me also say that many teachers clear cafeteria debt for students and we buy t-shirts and sweatshirts from the school for our kids. Again, not for accolades, just because we saw those who couldn’t afford it. We never make a spectacle out of giving them the school merchandise, it just appears on their desk one morning.

You can imagine Ryan Bridge's eyes rolling as he listens to this school board chair explain why her school is refusing to make govt requested changes to the teaching curriculum. The speaker Ms Kate Keddell is Chair of Queens School board (Dunedin) and she says the govt is wrong to ask schools to cut references to the Treaty of Waitangi. She knows all the buzzwords- diversity, inclusion, blah blah blah but doesn't know critical items like attendance rates or achievement results. Around 200 govt schools out of 2000 have made public statements reiterating their commitment to the Treaty. Kate said the Treaty was fundamental for schools in an inclusive society. "What it means for us is that when we are making decisions, we look at them through a lens of equity and cultural responsiveness and inclusion," she said. The government has said the Treaty is an obligation for the Crown, not schools. It said schools should be focused on ensuring high achievement for all students, not on figuring out how to give effect to the Treaty.

Her apartment is nearly empty, her refrigerator barely has anything in it at all, she has a car that works when it wants to, so where does all her money go to? The answer is she feels it’s necessary to make sacrifices so that her kids can have everything they need to be excited and engaged about learning. We always hear about how important their jobs are since they are teaching our kids and raising them in for us in many other ways. Since school funding can be tight, instead of teachers having to pay for everything to teach our kids, would it be appropriate or acceptable if at the beginning of the year the parents are charged a small materials fee for each child so teachers don’t have to spend their own money?

There are things that we can do about it, and we don’t, but for some reason as Americans we value something different. It’s sickening, it’s sad for the kids, it’s sad for the kids that have to grow up like this. It’s sad for the kids to walk through the door and not know what’s going to happen. So hearts go out to the lives lost, kids that are hurt, teachers that have to go through this, families that drop their kids off at schools and don’t have their kid come home. Hearts go out to them. The sad thing is we can’t sit here and tell them that help is on the way, because we’re not going to do a damn thing about it”

99% of Edtech software does nothing to ensure students aren't cheating, guessing or rushing. This is a *huge* oversight that has made the majority of edtech apps ineffective for your average student. (cheating is rampant at schools + universities) For our Texas Sports Academy schools, we're solving this problem by building our own in-house cheat detection system. When the students are doing their 2 hours of academics, we have a recording system that watches their screen/webcam and streams the footage to our backend. All this video data gets analyzed by our AI system and any instances of cheating (in in-house or external learning apps) are immediately flagged for our Texas Sports Academy coaches & admins.
