The selective outrage is impossible to miss. Rahul Gandhi, who today speaks the language of protest and democratic rights, had a very different view in 2011 during Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement. In Parliament, he warned: “A process divorced from the machinery of an elected government that seeks to undo the checks and balances created to protect the supremacy of Parliament and this House sets a dangerous precedent for our democracy… Today, the proposed law is against corruption. Tomorrow, it may be directed toward something that is far less universally heralded. It may attack the plurality of our society and our democracy.” Back then, Rahul Gandhi effectively portrayed a mass protest as a threat to democracy. Today, he invokes democracy to defend another protest. Which Rahul Gandhi should India believe? And while the Congress lectures others on compassion, let us not forget the midnight police crackdown on Baba Ramdev’s peaceful protest at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan in June 2011 under the UPA government. Tear gas, lathicharge and force were used against sleeping protesters. Rajbala, a 51-year-old woman participating in the protest, suffered catastrophic spinal injuries that left her paralysed. After months of battling for her life, she succumbed to those injuries. Contrast that with the present case. Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to a hospital following directions of the High Court to safeguard his health during an indefinite fast. There was no midnight lathicharge, no violent dispersal, and no attempt to crush dissent through brute force. If Rahul Gandhi wishes to invoke the values of truth and non-violence, he must first explain the Congress party’s own record instead of indulging in political amnesia.

As part of this campaign, Leader of Opposition Shri Rahul Gandhi ji has already interacted with students in Kota and will soon address students in Patna and Prayagraj, culminating in a major rally in Delhi in mid-July. Shri Rahul Gandhi is not just raising the issues surrounding NEET and CBSE examinations, he is raising the fundamental issue of education in India and the urgent need for greater public investment in the sector. Today, families across the country are spending more on coaching centres than the Central Government spends on education. This reflects a fundamental mismatch in our education system, where coaching centres have become indispensable for success. I wish to re-emphasise the critical importance of the office of the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, as intended by the Constituent Assembly. Although the temptation to divorce him from his times, the challenges he had to face, and to look at him devoid of the historical context in which he functioned has become quite widespread. Yet, while we welcome ongoing analysis of his contributions, what is not acceptable is the systematic attempt being made to denigrate, distort, demean, and defame him. The sole objective of this is not only to diminish him as a personality and undermine his universally recognised role in India's independence struggle and his leadership in the early decades of an independent nation grappling with unprecedented problems, but also to demolish his multifaceted legacy in a crude and self-serving attempt to rewrite history. Analysis is one thing, but deliberate mischief with what he said, what he wrote, and what he did is quite another — and totally unacceptable. And who are the forces that have launched this project? We all know that they have worked for years and years—for decades—and finally, here they are. They belong to an ideology that had no role whatsoever in our freedom movement, that had no role whatsoever in the making of our Constitution. In fact, they even burnt it and were totally against it. It is an ideology that long ago fanned an atmosphere of hate that ultimately led to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi ji. His killers today continue to be glorified by its adherents. It is an ideology that has consistently rejected the ideals of our founding fathers. It is an ideology with a bigoted and viciously communal outlook. Its approach to nationhood is based on stoking prejudices of all kinds. Let there be no doubt whatsoever that the project to vilify Jawaharlal Nehru ji is the main objective of the ruling establishment today. Their goal is not just to erase him; it is actually to destroy the social, political, and economic foundations on which our nation has been founded and built. The road ahead is not easy. VIDEO | Delhi: Advocates from different states submitting a representation to the Chief Justice of India over the July 21 incident. Advocate Sanket Gupta, says, "Today, advocates from various High Courts across the country submitted a representation to the Chief Justice of India. In the representation, we requested the Chief Justice to take note of the events of July 21, 2026, when Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Priyanka Gandhi, Supriya Sule, and several Members of Parliament staged a protest outside the Prime Minister's residence without any prior information or permission. The Prime Minister's residence is a highly sensitive zone, and such a protest was, in our view, contrary to the law and amounted to a violation of established rules. The incident created an atmosphere of concern across the country. A Union Cabinet Minister and senior Delhi Police officers arrived at the spot and tried to persuade the protesters to disperse, but the unlawful assembly, in our opinion, continued despite their efforts. He adds, “We have requested the Chief Justice to seek an explanation for why this unlawful assembly took place and to ensure appropriate action is taken. Article 19 of the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to express their views, but Article 14 also makes it clear that everyone is equal before the law. If an ordinary citizen is required to obtain permission to hold a protest, the question is whether the Leader of the Opposition can stage a demonstration in a highly sensitive area without such permission. In our view, the protest not only put the Leader of the Opposition at risk but also endangered the other MPs present. Any untoward incident could have occurred there. Subsequently, through a post on social media, people, including students, were also called to gather at the site. We have seen the situations that developed in countries like Nepal and Bangladesh. To prevent any such situation in India, we believe the Chief Justice should take immediate cognisance of the matter and issue appropriate guidelines to ensure that no future protest creates an atmosphere of disorder or threatens the country's sovereignty."

The incident created an atmosphere of concern across the country. A Union Cabinet Minister and senior Delhi Police officers arrived at the spot and tried to persuade the protesters to disperse, but the unlawful assembly, in our opinion, continued despite their efforts. He adds, “We have requested the Chief Justice to seek an explanation for why this unlawful assembly took place and to ensure appropriate action is taken. Article 19 of the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to express their views, but Article 14 also makes it clear that everyone is equal before the law. If an ordinary citizen is required to obtain permission to hold a protest, the question is whether the Leader of the Opposition can stage a demonstration in a highly sensitive area without such permission. In our view, the protest not only put the Leader of the Opposition at risk but also endangered the other MPs present. Any untoward incident could have occurred there. Subsequently, through a post on social media, people, including students, were also called to gather at the site. We have seen the situations that developed in countries like Nepal and Bangladesh. To prevent any such situation in India, we believe the Chief Justice should take immediate cognisance of the matter and issue appropriate guidelines to ensure that no future protest creates an atmosphere of disorder or threatens the country's sovereignty."

Today, at Banga Bhawan in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri, I met victims of the deeply flawed SIR process, families who have lost loved ones and citizens who, despite being alive, have been falsely marked “dead” and erased from the electoral rolls. Their testimonies were heartbreaking. In a democracy, to inflict such suffering on the people, is not just tragic, it is unconscionable. Women, senior citizens, migrant workers, daily wage earners, patients, entire lives have been thrown into chaos by this reckless and inhumane exercise. What is even more alarming is that, without any statutory authority and in violation of the Representation of the People Act, an unprecedented number of micro-observers have been deployed in Bengal to usurp the powers of EROs and AROs. Rules are being rewritten mid-process, technologies misused, and procedures weaponised, all to selectively target Bengal and its people. The BJP has failed to win the trust of the people. It has failed politically. And so it has chosen to hijack a constitutional institution to do what it cannot achieve democratically. But their conspiracies will only strengthen our resolve. We will fight this assault on democracy with every constitutional means at our disposal. We will fight to protect every citizen’s right to vote, to defend Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution, and to uphold the sanctity of free and fair elections.

Last week, for the first time in the Romanian Parliament, the words "I am Taiwanese" were spoken, both in Hokkien and Mandarin, the most widely spoken languages in that country. They were spoken to assert a simple and firm truth: We cannot afford another nation martyred by a dictatorial regime, following the fate of Ukraine. We cannot allow Taiwan to become a target of political expansionist ambitions, economic and societal control, of a regime that does not respect human rights domestically and the rules of good neighborliness and collaboration internationally. My statement is a continuation of the efforts I make as co-chair of the Interparliamentary Alliance on China (Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC)) and member of the Formosa Club (The Formosa Club) to ensure that the Indo-Pacific region is not monopolized by an undemocratic player like the People's Republic of China, a player that has proven to prioritize the repressive interests of its party elite over the legitimate interests and aspirations, rights of its own citizens, national and religious minorities, and neighboring nations. This was abundantly proven this weekend when 10 Chinese warplanes crossed the median line separating the territorial waters of the People's Republic of China from those of Taiwan, in a blatant act of provocation. Below is the text of my statement from the Romanian Parliament on Wednesday, June 7, 2023: -------------------------- Dear colleagues, "Wǒ shì táiwān rén!" "Góa sī Tâi-oân lâng!" These two phrases, spoken today for the first time in the Romanian Parliament, mean "I am Taiwanese!", in Mandarin and Hokkien, two of the languages spoken in Taiwan. Through these words, the citizens of this country affirm their identity, an identity they have the right to have and to express freely. Identity is the key to a free and diverse society, where each individual has the right to express their culture, values, and aspirations. In Taiwan, this identity is flourishing, fueled by a rich history and a people dedicated to the values of democracy, freedom, and respect for human rights. Let's not forget that, like any free people, the Taiwanese identity is not defined by political conflicts or demarcation lines on the map, but by the people who call this island home. People who, despite pressures and challenges, continue to fight for democracy, civil rights, and freedom. And that's why, two weeks ago, I had the distinct honor of representing Romania at the inaugural meeting of the Formosa Club, a gathering of over 30 parliamentarians and MEPs who support Taiwan. As a member of the Romania-Taiwan friendship group, I witnessed a historic meeting that reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, an area of crucial importance for global security and prosperity. In this forum, we conveyed a clear and powerful message: any existing disputes between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait must be addressed through peaceful means and the status quo should not be unilaterally changed, against the will of the Taiwanese people. Any aggressive and reckless behavior not only harms reconciliation efforts but also unnecessarily escalates tensions in the region, an action we firmly oppose. Taiwan is an indispensable member of the international community, with much to offer in a range of fields. Taiwan's continued exclusion from international organizations is not in line with global interests. We consistently support Taiwan's meaningful involvement in meetings, mechanisms, and activities of multilateral institutions, including but not limited to the World Health Organization, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the International Criminal Police Organization, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Taiwan is a key partner and a democratic ally in the Indo-Pacific region. Every democracy, including Taiwan, has the right to develop comprehensive relationships with other countries to advance the common interests of their peoples and to promote the values of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. We underline the urgent need to strengthen our cooperation with Taiwan, such as through the establishment of trade, investment, and sectoral agreements, to enhance the resilience of our supply chains and our democracies. We reiterate our intention to continue standing with Taiwan and to do everything in our power to ensure its democracy, while strengthening the close ties between Taiwan, the EU, other European democracies, and transatlantic countries, to defend our common values and the global liberal democratic order. I invite you to join this cause, to support Taiwan's meaningful participation in international institutions, and to recognize its value as a member of the international community. It is time to strengthen our cooperation with Taiwan, to establish trade, investment, and sectoral agreements, to enhance the resilience of our supply chains and our democracies. The right to development, to promote the values of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law is not a privilege, but a fundamental right.
