The challenge system would be greatly enhanced by adding safe/out under its umbrella. What happens on the field should be decided by the characters on the field. Player vs umpire, in real time.

@Buster_ESPN @espnpodcasts I think a manager shouldnt be able to call up to someone watching something before they challenge. The challenge should be on only a manager’s snap judgement, bc that is what the ump had at that time. So its one perspective versus another

@Buster_ESPN @espnpodcasts That's so ridiculous. We want to get it right. The player making a snap decision is emotional. If the goal is to get it right, then the current system works. The system is based on how the other sports have successfully deployed replay. Bottom line, get it right

@Buster_ESPN @espnpodcasts Very solid take.

@Buster_ESPN @espnpodcasts 1000% should do this. And while we are at it, make it so the call on the field is irrelevant. Watch the replay and make a call.

@Buster_ESPN @espnpodcasts You can make it better by in determining balls-strikes without a challenge system. See? Easy. What’s next?

@Buster_ESPN @espnpodcasts I would expand this and say the replay room should be 9 people that have 30 seconds to cast a vote for confirmed, stands, or overturns, and you need 2/3 majority to overturn. Challenge in real time. They get 3 seconds to form a consensus, and then move on.

@Buster_ESPN @espnpodcasts Yep the current way it’s handled can be quite annoying

@Buster_ESPN @espnpodcasts Such a simple yet brilliant idea! Let's make it about the players again.

@Buster_ESPN @espnpodcasts I think it should still be separate from balls and strikes, but I completely agree that it should be triggered by the players and the current system sucks

Why can't everything be reviewable? For example in last night's Braves/Dodgers game the home plate ump blew a Wild Pitch call (claimed it was a foul tip) which costs the Braves a run. Replay video showed indisputable evidence that it was a Wild Pitch and there was no contact with the bat. But it was a play that was not reviewable under MLB rules.

@Buster_ESPN @espnpodcasts I could not disagree more. I want more accuracy and less complaining that players wasted a challenge. Give me the plate ump making the initial call but it auto reviewed as the ball is returned to the pitcher and just reset the pitch clock if something changed.

@Buster_ESPN @espnpodcasts Either have 60 seconds to see enough evidence to overturn the original call or just have the reply booth determine the call

@Buster_ESPN @espnpodcasts Amazing idea, we don’t need to cut to the manager waiting to see if his hand came off the bag for .004 seconds after every steal, if the player thought the call is wrong he can challenge, if not let’s keep it moving

@Buster_ESPN @espnpodcasts i think it should be 3 per catcher for strikes and balls, and for every new pitcher that comes in, they get an additional challenge, but the batting team gets an additional challenge for every new pitcher that comes. you can only use the additional one for that pitcher though.
