To watch actor Wagner Moura in any of his films—as a special-ops-unit police captain caught in a web of brutality in ‘Elite Squad,’ as a confident veteran journalist in ‘Civil War,’ or as that research scientist in ‘The Secret Agent’—is to see both intelligence and intuition at work. For Moura, connecting with the broader world is paramount, and this past year he has been on a roll. He won the Best Actor award for his role in The Secret Agent and became the first Brazilian actor to be nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars. Moura is among TIME’s 100 most influential people of the year. Read the full interview and see the list here:

If Leonardo DiCaprio doesn’t win the #Oscar for Best Actor, it will be yet another snub in a career filled with inexplicable snubs. How many times is the The Academy going to deny Leo an award he should’ve won? I still maintain Leo should win Best Actor this year- and years past.

When ‘Narcos’ was in production, the CEO of Netflix and some executives weren’t convinced it would become a hit in the United States, actor Wagner Moura recalls. “We think the show is really good, but Americans, they don’t read subtitles.” Since then, the Spanish-language drama has become a global phenomenon. For the Brazilian-born actor, who portrayed Pablo Escobar in the series, the role marked his breakthrough with American audiences. It was followed by a critically acclaimed performance in ‘Civil War’ and an award-winning leading role in ‘The Secret Agent’ last year. At the Cannes Film Festival last May, Moura won the Best Actor award for his role in ‘The Secret Agent.’ From there, both the movie and Moura were unstoppable: the film was up for four Academy Awards, including one for Moura’s subtly wrought performance. Moura became the first Brazilian to be nominated for the Best Actor award. Today, Moura is among TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2026. Read the full interview here:

Tom Cruise is hoping Alejandro Iñárritu can do for Cruise what he did for Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant: help him win the Oscar for Best Actor after years of knocking on the door. It’s not just Leo- Iñárritu nearly helped Michael Keaton win Best Actor for Birdman. In other words, Cruise is in good hands.

Matthew McConaughey beat Leonardo DiCaprio for the Oscar for Best Actor over a decade ago when McConaughey won for Dallas Buyers Club. Matt didn’t just win the Oscar, he also stole Wolf of Wall Street with this scene. Tough timing for Leo, who otherwise deserved the Oscar in ‘14.

Actor Wagner Moura has made history as the first Brazilian nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars this year for ‘The Secret Agent,’ and he has an unbreakable link to his home country. The movie, Moura's latest project, is set in Brazil in 1977, at a time when that country was under the thumb of an oppressive political dictatorship, and it has resonated with viewers all over the world—particularly in the United States. Moura plays a research scientist who’s become a government target, a man on the run whose greatest wish is to settle down and live a quiet life with his young son. Directed by Moura’s friend Kleber Mendonça Filho, ‘The Secret Agent’ works as an artful, beguiling thriller, but it’s also a picture of a country whose citizens, in real life, had reason to live in fear. Moura, 49, was just a baby during this period, but as he got older, he saw how its effects lingered. Moura has long been a movie star in Brazil. At home, he, his wife, and three sons speak only Portuguese, and he keeps a place in Salvador, in the state of Bahia, where he grew up. Moura is one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2026. I think Robert Pattinson is reaching Leonardo DiCaprio status as one of the best actors alive, smack dab in his prime. The things Pattinson is doing right now are historic. I feel extremely fortunate to be running this account at a time when an actor like Pattinson is all in.

Ukrainians presented American actor Sean Penn with an “Oscar” made from steel taken from a railcar damaged in a russian attack. Recently, Sean Penn won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film One Battle After Another. However, he was not present at the awards ceremony, as he had traveled to Ukraine. Instead, Ukrainians created their own Oscar for him: “This ‘Oscar’ is not just about cinema. It is about resilience, humanity, and the courage that keeps us moving.”
