Stanley Kubrick is getting the full Criterion Collection treatment: The Complete Kubrick is a 4k restoration of all Kubrick’s 13 features (all masterpieces in their own right) along with some short films & behind-the-scenes footage of Kubrick. The cost comes in at about $480, which I think is hefty, but I plan on purchasing The Complete Kubrick for multiple reasons, the primary reason being I want to have physical editions of each of Kubrick’s films in my home. Period. Drops October 20th, folks.

According to Kirk Douglas, during the filming of "Paths of Glory" (1957), Stanley Kubrick made the veteran actor Adolphe Menjou do the same scene 17 times. After a few takes, Menjou said to Kubrick, "That was my best reading. I think we can break for lunch now." It was well past the usual lunch time but Kubrick said he wanted another take. Menjou went into an absolute fury. In front of Kirk Douglas & the entire crew he blasted off on what he claimed was Kubrick's dubious parentage, and made several other unprintable references to Kubrick's relative greenness in the art of directing actors. Stanley Kubrick merely listened calmly, and, after Menjou had spluttered to an uncomplimentary conclusion, said quietly: "All right, let's try the scene once more." With utter docility, Menjou went back to work. Douglas said, "Stanley instinctively knew what to do." Douglas felt that Kubrick's air of Knowledge can infuriate an actor at first, but then, "You settle down and admire him." However, because post-synchronizing a soundtrack for a feature film is more complex than dubbing sound for a short subject, Kubrick ran into problems that added to the $9,000 already spent on shooting the picture. As a result, 'Fear and Desire' never earned back its initial investment though independent distributor Joseph Burstyn was able to book the film on the art-house circuit, where it garnered good reviews. When 'Fear and Desire' was previewed in Los Angeles, Kubrick got some negative feedback from members of the audience who thought Mazursky’s performance of In was overwrought. A member of the film’s crew who was present recalled that Kubrick wept when some moviegoers had tittered at Mazursky’s performance during the film. That only showed, he explained, how much Kubrick cared about his movies. Nevertheless, the film got some positive reviews. More than one critic singled out some scenes, such as the one in which an enemy general is shot, as visually compelling. Kubrick considered the script to be "Pretty dumb". Kubrick believed he achieved only limited success in making the movie visually interesting as a way of counteracting Trumbo's "Pedestrian" dialogue. Kubrick and Douglas never were reconciled. “He’ll be a fine director some day,” Douglas said afterward, “If he falls on his face just once. It might teach him how to compromise.” In one interview, Douglas added that some directors are talented, some directors are bastards, and that Stanley Kubrick was a talented bastard. When Kirk offered me the job of directing 'Spartacus', I thought that I might be able to make some thing of it if the script could be changed. Steven Spielberg saw Stanley Kubrick for the first time in 1980 while he was building sets for "The Shining" (1980). After the movie was released, Spielberg went to Kubrick's house for dinner. Kubrick asked him if he liked the movie. Spielberg, who didn't like the movie in the first viewing, started to tell Kubrick all the things he liked about the movie, rather than telling that he didn't like the movie. Kubrick saw right through him and said, "Steven, you obviously didn't like my picture very much". Spielberg replied, "There is a lot of things that I like about the picture". Spielberg pinpointed Jack Nicholson's performance. He called him a "great actor" and a "great performance", but a "Great Kabuki Performance", almost like Kabuki theater. Kubrick then asked, "You mean you think Jack went over the top?". Spielberg replied affirmatively. Kubrick then asked Spielberg to name his top 5 favourite actors of all time without thinking much. Spielberg listed Spencer Tracy, Henry Fonda, James Stewart, Cary Grant and Clark Gable. Kubrick said, "Stop" & questioned, "Where was James Cagney on that list?" Spielberg said that he is up there high, Kubrick then said, "But not in the top 5". Finally Kubrick said," You don't consider James Cagney as one of the 5 best actors around, but I do. This is why Jack Nicholson's performance is a great one." Since then, Spielberg has caw "The Shining" more than 25 times & considers it one of his favourite pictures. Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut had a lot of secret truths hidden in it. Eyes Wide Shut was not the movie Kubrick intended audiences to see. The studio cut 24 minutes from the film, and just a few days later, the legendary filmmaker was dead... What was in those 24 minutes? And what happens at the real masked parties? The director was found dead on March 7th, 1999, at his home in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, just six days after screening the final cut of Eyes Wide Shut to Warner Brothers executives. As a result, he was unable to control the release of what was to be his final film... One of the greatest moments in Kubrick's Barry Lyndon is the scene where Barry meets the Chevalier and cannot commit to his deception over an Irishman. Anyone who has lived overseas for years can understand this. Kubrick himself left the United States for England, and I wonder whether some part of that feeling was personal to him. When you have lived for a long time somewhere completely foreign, meeting someone from your own country hits you profoundly.
