Our latest work is out today in Science Magazine: a self-organizing system that models organizer-driven patterning and commissural axon guidance in human neural development. This was achieved with human midline #assembloids by combining floor plate and spinal cord #organoids from pluripotent stem cells. A key advance is the three-part configuration (a floor plate squeezed in between two spinal cords), which enables human axons to cross the midline (and the subsequent synchronization of activity between the two parts seen in the video below). This platform opens the door to many applications; here, we used it to screen and identify human-enriched midline crossing regulators. Work led by Massimo Onesto with Neal Amin

It's a Jaguar so it's South America so it's a Caiman, not an alligator. Jaguars love the water and are incredibly strong. Their bite can either penetrate into the brain or sever the spinal cord. They don't go for the throat they go straight for the brain, piercing through the skull. Out of all the big cats, they are the most used to hunting in water and have one trick up their sleeve that their fellow Panthera brethren have yet to master: a bone-cracking bite to the back of the skull, which automatically paralyzes their crocodilian prey.

Junco update. Not the best news 😞 There is going to be no miracle operation I’m afraid 😞 After being hit on the spine as a puppy he now has something called ‘Spinal Walk’. Spinal walking (SW) refers to the regaining of involuntary, reflex-based stepping or ambulation in animals, particularly dogs and cats, following a spinal cord injury that has resulted in paraplegia and a loss of deep pain sensation in the hind limbs. It's a form of motor function recovery that relies on spinal reflexes rather than conscious control from the brain. We are going to start physio and have been informed in some cases the dogs have been able to walk (involuntary movements), more of a wobble perhaps. However the injury is more than 7mths old and the chances are slim but that doesn’t mean we can’t try. Another problem he has is the front legs haven’t developed properly. The wheelchair seems to restrict him, he’s much happier zooming with the towel under his waste. To be honest we are not the most experienced in wheelchair doggies but we are willing. What we want is to find him a home set up for this kind of dog. We know that won’t be easy but kennel life in this condition is not a life so we will try hard to make this happen for him. We just need your shares and to help him find a wonderful home 🙏🏻❤️

The amazing thing about this is it raises me into a standing position which is vital for someone with a spinal cord injury to help with numerous things such as blood flow, Muscle & Joint Health, skin health, digestion and respiratory just to name a few. Andrew Huberman on why you can't think your way out of stress: Huberman is asked what he means when he says you cannot control the mind with the mind. His answer reframes how we should approach stress, anxiety, and emotional regulation entirely. "If you're very upset, it's hard to talk yourself out of it. If you're stressed, it's hard to think yourself out of it." He explains that when we're in heightened emotional states, we tend to default to mental strategies, rationalizing, "third personing" ourselves, texting a friend, trying to reason our way back to calm. But according to Andrew D. Huberman, Ph.D., this rarely works: "It's very hard to get yourself out of those states with thinking alone." The solution, he argues, lies not in the mind but in the body. "The beauty of the autonomic nervous system is that it traverses the brain and the body and it connects to essentially all the organs of the body. And it's a two-way street such that certain behaviors, even certain patterns of breathing etc. allow us to shift between very very alert and stressed and very calm." This two-way street is the key insight. The body doesn't just receive signals from the brain, it also sends them back. Shifting your physiology shifts your mental state, which in turn shifts the kinds of thoughts and actions available to you. "If you're very very stressed, you're very very upset, two things happen. One, it's very hard to take your focus off whatever it is that's upsetting you. And if you don't know what's upsetting you, you know, pure anxiety, but you don't know why, it's very hard to take your mind off of the feelings of anxiety." In other words, anxiety hijacks your attention and then traps you there. Trying to think your way out only tightens the grip. The way out is to move through the body first: "If we turn to the body and certain behaviors, we are able to move ourselves along the autonomic continuum. And at that point, when we've done that successfully, we are able to think about things differently." "If you can't control the mind with the mind, look to the body to control the mind."

The first part is called telepathy, allows someone who has lost the use of their body to control a computer or a phone just by thinking. In fact, you can interact with a number of people who've done this online. Right now, they're on on the 𝕏 platform, you can DM them, I think, and they'll reply by thinking. Then there's a second device, very similar to the first one, called BLINDSIGHT, which will enable people who are blind to see, including people who have been blind from birth. It'll interface directly with the visual cortex in the brain. And hopefully we'll be able to do the first blind site implant in a human within the next 12 months, I'd say I'm quite confident that we can do that. And then I also think it's quite likely, if not close to certain, that we'll be able to enable somebody who's has a severed spinal column to walk again, and by taking the signals from the brain, bridging them over the severed connection in the spine and re energizing the nerves past the point that's broken, like you can just think of it like some wires got broken, and if you can bridge the signals, your body will work again."
