The Conservatives introduced the two-child benefit cap to make things fair. Labour are likely to scrap it at the budget, which will cost £3billion. It means higher taxes for the rest of us, and more benefits for others. Wrong priorities, totally unfair, and simply unaffordable.

You don’t help people out of poverty by making the whole country poorer. That's why Conservatives will bring back the two-child benefit cap, which will save £3 billion a year. Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves have made everyone poorer because they killed growth and drove up the cost of living. 5,000 people a day are moving onto sickness benefits. It’s totally unaffordable and it’s a debt bomb for our children. Labour’s “solution” is record tax hikes and more welfare handouts. Scrapping the two-child benefit cap will mean over half a million families receive an average amount of £5,000 extra. Some will get much more. That’s all paid for by taxing working people, who are already struggling, even more. Scrapping the two-child benefit cap is backed by all the other political parties: from the Liberal Democrats to Reform, from the Greens to the SNP. Only the Conservatives believe in the benefit cap and only the Conservatives have pledged to bring it back. Scrapping the two-child benefit cap only increases dependency on welfare and reduces the incentive for parents to work. It is only fair that people on benefits should have to make the same decisions about having children as everyone else. The Conservative solution is the only one that works: cut spending, cut tax. back business, get the deficit down and live within our means.

After 19 months since Labour suspended MPs for voting to scrap the two-child benefit cap, it has now voted to scrap the two-child limit. Congratulations to campaigners, but the work isn’t over. As long as the benefit cap remains, thousands of children are left behind. The Labour government must abolish it in full, without delay. Anything less is austerity 2.0.
