Every housing unit we build lowers the cost of finding a place to live and returns agency to the middle class. In Congress, I’m a cosponsor of the Yes In My Backyard Act (YIMBY) bill, which will prioritize federal dollars for communities that reduce the red tape limiting housing construction. I’m also a champion of getting shop class back in junior high. We’ll fix our housing shortage by reducing red tape, building more housing units, and ensuring young people learn the skills they need to build homes right here in Southwest Washington.

Energy is growth. But our energy costs are some of the highest in the developed world. We have to cut the cost of power and only the Conservatives have a plan to do so. The British people are being squeezed, and our industries are being held back. This spineless Labour Government refuses to take the tough decisions needed to grow our economy. The Conservatives will scrap the carbon tax, paid for by getting Britain drilling. We will back British industry, level the playing field with foreign imports, and bring jobs and investment back to the UK. This will bring more jobs and growth to the economy, and cut costs for business. We believe in enterprise, in competitiveness, and in putting our national interest first. Only the Conservatives have a plan to get Britain working again: cut spending, cut tax and back business.

The first rung of the employment ladder is disappearing. Saturday jobs and first opportunities gave young people more than a wage. They built confidence, taught responsibility and provided the experience needed to get on. Now, Government decisions are making those opportunities harder to find. Higher National Insurance, rising business rates, new employment regulations and soaring energy costs are piling burden after burden onto the businesses that create jobs. Young people are paying the price. The Government cannot keep looking at each decision in isolation while ignoring the cumulative damage it is doing to jobs, businesses and economic growth. The Labour Government has done enough damage. It needs to think again.

Homelessness and the housing crisis are not two different problems, they are two sides of the same coin. And they have the same solution – permanent affordable housing. Trickle down economics is a fallacy. The market cannot provide affordable housing. Prices are only going up, driving people into homelessness, or out of the city entirely. Rae will build social housing on public lands and speed up housing production citywide, cutting red tape while keeping in place tenant and homeowner protections to ensure that people are able to keep their homes. Rae will streamline the city’s housing strategy, creating a Mayor’s Office of Housing For All to consolidate these different departments under one roof, with a public dashboard to track progress and hold us accountable. Development charges increase the cost of homes for everyone. They are a housing tax. During a housing crisis, we don’t think you should raise taxes on housing.
