The fighter the Air Force rejected went on to become the backbone of Navy carrier aviation. Northrop’s YF-17 Cobra first flew on June 9, 1974 at Edwards Air Force Base. Powered by twin General Electric YJ101 engines producing up to 15,000 pounds of thrust each, it stretched 55 feet 6 inches long with a 35-foot wingspan and could hit nearly Mach 1.95 while pulling 9.4 g. Two days after its maiden flight it became the first American jet to go supersonic in level flight without afterburner. Though it lost the Lightweight Fighter fly-off to the YF-16, the design was reworked into the F/A-18 Hornet and has served on carrier decks ever since. 🫡

Built by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), the KF-21 is a 4.5-generation twin-engine multirole fighter designed to modernize the South Korean Air Force and reduce reliance on foreign imports.
