The debt ceiling doesn’t keep our national debt down, but it does threaten long-term financial harm. Watch me apply a debt ceiling to everyday life—and see why it doesn’t work.

Stop pouring billions of dollars into Ukraine before you start.

In your analogy you listed off personal debt that must be incurred. Food, braces, etc. Now what spending do we incur in this country that are “must haves”? Would you consider something like gender equity studies in Pakistan a “must spend”? Now go through the hundreds of thousands in unneeded US spending and then we can maybe equate your personal analogy to the US spending and debt.

Now pretend that you took this credit card out in your kids’ name .. and although you know that they will have to pay it back some day, you only pay the interest and you keep spending money and raising your debt ceiling Because you refuse to budget. Not only that but you take in more money every year and still refuse to pay more than the interest. You know that one day it’ll all be due but you don’t care , you’ll be long gone.

FYI, you're supposed to consider the debt ceiling when you propose the budget. Not at the 11th hour when your bank account is running dry.

Per usual… making it make sense in the clearest language for all to understand. Katie Porter shows how it’s done without smoke and mirrors, threats or division. She exudes leadership and equity for all.

Notice how none of her spiel talks about income or how she's going to pay off that credit card? That's the problem. To stick with the example: Buy generic; you're kids don't need to wear Nike; and you absolutely should reconsider your vacation to the Bahamas.

The former is OBVIOUSLY true. The latter is open to some debate. Paying these bills might be worse in the long run, especially if they continue accruing. Sorry to spoil your narrative.

So I can go to my credit card company and ask them to raise my credit line so I can buy things I can’t afford or pay back all at once? So when I die the credit card company will come and take what I owe them out of my heirs money I leave them. It’s wrong either way! Stop spending
