In 2021, MPs, including Liberals, voted to recognize the genocide, including forced labour, of Uyghurs by the PRC. In response, the Liberal government imposed sanctions on one PRC entity and four PRC officials in Xinjiang for these human rights violations. Around the same time, Article 23.6 of CUSMA came into force, which ban imports produced using forced labour into the North American free trade zone. Today, a Liberal MP intimated that Uyghur forced labour has not taken place, while questioning a former PCO official, Margaret McCuaig-Johnston 🇨🇦. The Liberal government needs to answer the following question: Does the government still assess that Uyghur forced labour has and is taking place? This is important.
