Today, while in Nairobi South C, a resident approached me with a complaint about a neighbour who had allegedly diverted raw sewage into the stormwater drainage system. The resident explained that the situation becomes even worse when it rains, as the sewage overflows onto the roads. At the time of my visit, raw sewage was visibly flowing into the drainage system, creating an unbearable stench and posing a serious public health and environmental risk. I immediately engaged the Nairobi Water and Environment teams and directed them to take urgent action. Anyone found illegally directing raw sewage into the stormwater drainage system must be held accountable. We cannot allow such irresponsible actions to endanger the health of residents, pollute our environment, and compromise our drainage infrastructure. Appropriate action must be taken to stop this immediately.

Today’s heavy rainfall put to test our drainage systems in Kampala, and the results are encouraging, although we have not yet achieved our target level of resilience. Areas including Sebana Road, Clock Tower,forest mall, golf course and Allen Road experienced flash floods, but in most of them the water cleared within about seven minutes, compared to past incidents where flooding would last for hours or days and disrupt businesses immensly. This improvement follows recent Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) drainage upgrades, including the construction of 16 crossing culverts along Allen Road and Sebana Road into Nakivubo Channel has increased the city’s capacity to tame storm water. Additional works are ongoing, including longitudinal drainage along Ben Kiwanuka Street and a planned box culvert on Namirembe Road under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Project. Two buildings, Totala Business and Qualicell, experienced basement flooding due to drainage challenges internal to them, and the KCCA drainage team has been quickly deployed with suction trucks to support them evacuate the water. As drainage improvement works continue, inconvenience caused by this natural occurrence is regreted. Our call on residents, traders & building owners is to dispose of waste responsibly and avoid blocking drainage channels. Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is working to build a cleaner, safer, and more flood-resilient Kampala.

I wish to assure Nairobi residents that our engineers are actively on the ground working to unblock clogged drainage systems. Investigations have established that the persistent flooding in the CBD is largely caused by irresponsible dumping of garbage into drainage channels by some shop owners and hawkers. This behavior is unacceptable. The county government will address this problem through strict enforcement actions. Compliance officers have been deployed to monitor the area and ensure adherence to environmental and public health regulations. Let this serve as a warning: anyone found dumping waste into drainage systems will face immediate legal action without exception. We must all take responsibility to keep our city clean, safe, and functional.

My heart is with every family and community affected. 🙏🇬🇭 Beyond today, we all have a role to play — not dumping refuse in drainage systems, avoiding building structures in waterways, and ensuring that households construct proper drainage systems to help ease waterflow. During a visit to the North Campus Project of the Palace Museum in Beijing, being built by CSCEC, C-stars Ruohua and Tha Satya from Thailand and Cambodia explored how red walls, golden roofs and traditional architectural details come together with seismic isolation and waterproofing technologies. The project is still taking shape, and they are already looking forward to seeing the completed museum.
