The Dutch mobility system isn't just built around cycling. It's built around bike-train intermodality: the bike solves the train's convenience problem and the train solves the bike's range problem. Together they offer an attractive alternative to driving:

Hmm, I don’t think the part about taking your bike in the train is accurate. Dutch trains are well known for being bike unfriendly. NS tries to discourage taking them on trains with high prices and limited spots. Yes, OV-fiets is an amazing system. But taking your own is a hassle

@ClarkeMicah All true, but the average mileage of a Dutch car is 8,000 miles, about 600 miles more than a UK car. And car ownership is more common in Netherlands than in the UK according to laytest EU stats (which are a bit old).

To be honest we used to have this here in the UK up to the late 80s early 90s, as one could always pop your bike into the guards van (back of the train), no matter where you were going...🤷

This is just common sense. Pity our infrastructure people don’t have enough political support to go large in this. Car brain 🧠 is toxic particularly in the UK and USA 😔

Note that in the US we often have a hard time getting bike trails to go anywhere near anything useful - they end up being where a railroad used to be, not on the route through a housing development to the grocery store.

No, in fact the NS (Dutch Railways) is grossly incompetent. Tickets are expensive, trains unreliable

Most people don't commute on bikes; they either use trains and busses to get to their jobs, or they may have a car. However, they use bikes for basically everything else, which just makes sense.

The advantage of the bike is, you always find a free spot in front of your house, noone can criticize you, because you're a holy anti-climate-change-warrior!
