I thought the Benelli M2-G1 was just a new version of the M2. I was wrong. The M2 is still the M2 — still inertia-driven, still selling, still doing what it has always done. The M2-G1 is something else entirely. It’s gas operated, rear piston operated, with dual pistons collecting gas near the chamber and the recoil spring protected behind the receiver. In other words, Benelli built a new lane and parked it right between the M2 and the M4. And that’s where my problem starts. The M4 is still the M4. It has ARGO, auto-regulation, self-cleaning pistons, decades of reputation, and a war record behind it. But after shooting the M2-G1, I keep waiting for the moment where it reminds me I picked the cheaper gun. I haven’t found it yet. For duty use and extreme round counts, the M4 still wins. But for home defense, a truck gun, a range gun, or the shotgun that needs to work at three in the morning? Benelli may have made the M2-G1 a little too good.

On June 26, an all-hands fire broke out inside a basement apartment in a private dwelling in Queens. FDNY Fire Marshals determined the cause of the fire to be a lithium-ion battery that was charging in the kitchen of the fire apartment. The fire trapped a 48-year-old man inside the home, who had to escape through a bedroom window. The victim later died at a hospital. It's called the Antikythera Mechanism, and it is the oldest known computer on earth. It was built by the ancient Greeks, around 100 BC, and it should not exist. Nothing else of its sophistication would appear anywhere in the world for more than a thousand years after it... It was found by sponge divers off the Greek island of Antikythera, in the wreck of a trading ship that had sunk in the first century BC, surrounded by bronze statues and pottery. The corroded fragments looked like nothing at first, and sat largely ignored in a museum in Athens. Only over the following decades, and especially with modern X-ray and CT scanning in our own century, did researchers finally see inside it. What they found was a machine. Behind its bronze face was a system of at least thirty interlocking precision gears, cut and arranged with a sophistication that would not be matched until the geared astronomical clocks of medieval Europe, well over a thousand years later. It was, in the words of the team that studied it, a mechanical computer that worked by turning astronomical theory into bronze... And it did extraordinary things. You turned a hand crank on the side, and the mechanism calculated the positions of the sun, the moon, and the five planets the Greeks knew. It tracked the phases of the moon. It predicted solar and lunar eclipses years in advance. It even displayed the four-year cycle of the ancient Olympic Games.
