The fact that the door guard didn't even recognize Stringer really shows how much he'd distanced himself from the street side of the organization. Really sets the tone for this scene. This scene perfectly illustrates where Slim fits in the ranks without actually saying it. High up enough to...

Avon stepping in to pull Slim off the hit isn’t just about Clay Davis being too high profile. It’s him quietly reclaiming the organisation from Stringer in that moment. Stringer had started treating people like staff instead of soldiers, and Avon still knew the difference.

That Avon and Stringer tension is what makes The Wire so compelling. They both want power, but their visions for getting there are becoming impossible to reconcile.

Stringer wanted to be a businessman, but he couldn't stop thinking like a street soldier and Avon called him on it.

Slim was the smart ass pawn that made it across the chess board and became a Queen. Slim is the most power piece in the game in the final scene.

The brilliance of The Wire is how every argument reveals something deeper about power, loyalty, and identity. Stringer wanted both worlds, but they kept pulling him apart

"You know the difference between me and you? I bleed red and you bleed green. I look at you these days, String, you know what I see? I see a man without a country. Not hard enough for this right here and maybe, just maybe, not smart enough for them out there"

This scene is a masterclass in tragedy and hypocrisy.

You can’t have both ways unless you have power. String did not have enough power to make demands on anyone. Slim Charles was smart enough to not make String feel insulted but was politically savvy enough to know that Avon was going to overturn the call.

Avon and Stringer’s clash perfectly captures the tension between the street and the business, and Slim Charles barely saying a word somehow makes his “Who we hittin?” even colder.
