Of course the Yankees are the ones to bitch and complain about something. Some things just never change.

What kind of voodoo is performed by placing the bat handle over the base?

Yankees and Thr Royals were the best rivalries ever on the 70’s and 80’s

Would have loved to see Brett get his hands on the ump!!! It might have burst their bubble of invincibility and led to better performances

Trivia: when the game resumed 3 month later, why did Billy Martin protest it?

Was absolutely surreal watching this live. I never saw a HR denied before and Brett was the angriest person I still have ever seen

I watched that game live with my dad back in the day...

Thankfully they reversed this decision after protest and the Royals came back later in the season to finish the game and won

It was the 80s… probably did a bump as soon as he got back in the dugout

Yeah, because pine tar makes you hit the ball out against a good reliever. Pine tar. 😂 Pine tar.

Now they got torpedo bats that look like bowling pins to help the hitter. Back then they outlawed a Homer over a little pine tar. 😀

I was at that game. My uncle was already packing our stuff when the homer reached the upper deck. When I saw Billy Martin came out to argue, I said that I wasn't leaving. We laughed all afternoon after the out was called! 🎉

I remember they reversed the call and gave Brett the home run but I don't remember why, because it sure seems like it was the right call

They should have replayed the whole game. Suspending it for over three weeks gave royals an unfair advantage of knowing quisenberry would be pitching for an inning. Rosters were different as well. Yankees had a share of first place until it was overturned.

Brett broke the rule, whether you agree with the rule or not. He shuold have been fined/suspended for his childlike hissy fit. Lee MacPhail reversed the rule retroactive to that game. Ruined his legacy imo

Love this throwback to the Pine Tar Incident! After George Brett’s HR, Gaylord Perry slyly handed the bat to a bat boy to hide it in the clubhouse, keeping umps from inspecting it right away—classic Perry mischief! Fun fact: Perry’s spitball antics (think Vaseline & K-Y Jelly) inspired Eddie Harris in Major League—the pitcher who’d use anything to doctor a pitch! Perry even spilled his tricks in his book Me and the Spitter. No wonder MLB made “Gaylord’s Rule” to stop him!

Little known fact Normy….The home plate ump, Tim McClellan, was also behind the plate to Sammy Sosa’s corked bat.
