60 lbs of gear MINIMUM, if they went up without any tools. But most of them will be carrying hose, bags with other high rise equipment, hand tools. It was more than 60 lbs

I remember running a fire alarm where we had to climb up I think 15 floors? I couldn't even make it up the whole way before dropping some of the weight. Turnout gear + SCBA alone is ~60 lbs plus high rise hose, tools, hand tools, unbelievable how far they climbed

Those two towers are 110 stories high. This might be the riskiest mission to be able to rescue as many people from the burning buildings. Praying for them and hoping as many people make it out OK. I’m in constant contact with someone who’s right near lower Manhattan rn.

On Friday, our latest class of probationary firefighters visited the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in Manhattan—a tradition that connects every generation of firefighters to the 343 members of our Department who made the Supreme Sacrifice on September 11, 2001. This class carries special significance: Class 1 of 2026 is the final class of firefighters to make this visit and graduate from the Fire Academy before we mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11. As they prepare to join the ranks of New York City's Bravest after graduation, they do so with a deeper understanding of the legacy they now carry and our enduring promise to Never Forget.

Early Saturday morning, the FDNY responded to a 3-alarm fire at 1905 Flushing Avenue in Queens, bringing approximately 120 firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics to the scene. Units arrived to find heavy fire originating in a tire repair shop on the first floor, with fire quickly extending to the upper floors and into an adjoining occupancy. “Units attempted an aggressive interior attack, but due to the volume of fire and a localized collapse in the rear of the store, we were forced to transition to an exterior operation,” said Assistant Chief David Simms. “This was a deep-seated and stubborn fire involving thousands of tires, which makes extinguishment particularly challenging.” At the height of the incident, members operated under difficult conditions as crews worked to confine the fire and prevent further extension. “We had a total patient count of nine on the scene, five firefighters with minor burn injuries, and five civilians with minor injuries that were transported to area hospitals,” said EMS Division Chief Evan Suchecki. “Our teams on the scene did a great job recognizing the injuries and transporting quickly to area hospitals to ensure that treatment was rendered appropriately.” Firefighters remain on scene as operations continue. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Alex Honnold made history when he climbed Taipei 101 in Taiwan on January 25, 2026. Taipei 101 is 508 meters tall and has 101 floors. Honnold climbed all the way to the top of the building and its spire in about 1 hour and 31 minutes. He did the climb free solo, meaning he used no ropes or harness for protection. The climb was broadcast live on Netflix as “Skyscraper Live,” and thousands of people watched. Honnold’s climb was an incredible feat of strength, focus, and courage and was described as the highest urban free-solo climb in history. I’ve been a fan of Alex Honnold since he climbed El Capitan in Yosemite. His free solo climb in 2017 was one of the most incredible climbing achievements ever.
