The E39 525i is not the car you buy when you want an E39. The 530i has more power. The 540i has the V8. The M5 has the S62. The 530d and 525d have torque and efficiency. The 525i has the M54 2.5L naturally aspirated straight-six, 192 HP, and a five-speed manual gearbox. That is exactly why it is worth talking about. The E39 chassis is widely considered the best driving 5 Series BMW ever made - precise steering, near-perfect weight distribution, and a rear-wheel drive setup that communicates everything the road is doing. The 525i with a manual puts you in that chassis without the weight of the V8, without the torque that makes the car easy to drive fast, and with just enough power to make you work for it. It is slower than its siblings, but still nice to drive and still a fun car.

The VR6 engine was born out of a packaging problem. VW's engineers needed a six-cylinder that could fit transversely in a front-wheel drive Golf engine bay. Something a conventional V6 with cylinder banks spread 90 degrees could never do. The solution was a narrow-angle 15-degree configuration with a single cylinder head shared across all six cylinders, making it barely wider than a four cylinder. The MK3 Golf VR6 was the first car to receive it in the Golf family 2.8L, 174 HP, 235 Nm, 0-100 km/h in around 7 seconds, and a sound unlike anything else in a hatchback body. Not the fastest car of its era. The most characterful one in its class without question. That engine went on to power the Corrado, the Passat, and eventually the Phaeton and even some Porsche models. This example here is the GTI VR6 and the VR6 produces 201 hp, looks like a lot of fun.

Not having factions is still one of the biggest disappointments about Modern Warfare 4, and modern CoD for that matter, for me personally. It genuinely saddens me that we'll probably never have that CoD4-BO2 era back of numerous factions, all with unique voice overs and quips that set each game apart from one another. It was such an incredible detail to have that made each classic game feel more immersive. I feel that it's such an easy fix to appeal to everyone (just add a filter lol), but Modern Warfare Remastered did a great job striking a middle ground - you can customize operators and still have actual factions in the game. I'm tired of this Vanguard operator style that goes on any team/nation/faction, would love to have the old style back.

I drove Tesla for the first time; I felt happy like a child for the first 10 minutes, and was totally disappointed the rest of the ride The autopilot feature is not available in the EU, but even the lane-control works extremely badly Tesla didn't recognize road works and almost crushed me into a barrier Then it went completely crazy on a temporary orange lane and started wiggling around The assistant consistently missed lanes and ignored speed limit signs, so I had to disable the assistant and drive manually I drove an electric BMW i4 before, and it had a much better cruise control and assistant (it boggles my mind that BMW kicked Tesla's ass in software) With BMW, I never had to touch the gas pedal and drove the car just using cruise control and speed limit assistant You could also set a speed limit, and even if you pressed full gas, it never crossed, which was handy in a city Tesla is still an insane product, the interior and exterior design are amazing, but it feels like an app with an amazing frontend and a very poor backend (at least in the EU) Driving gave me a lot of motivation to make more $$$, and I will still probably get a Tesla, and not a BMW bz BMW is a car for boomers

The E46 M3 GTR exists because BMW Motorsport needed an engine that did not exist. The P60B40 V8 was developed specifically to homologate the car for racing, and it never appeared in any other BMW road model. It was compact, lightweight and built for sustained high-rpm use rather than everyday refinement. This engine was not a variant of something else. It was a purpose-built solution to a single problem, to BEAT PORSCHE. That is why it disappeared once the problem disappeared. The GTR did not create a new direction for BMW. It marked a moment when the brand allowed motorsport to override normal product logic completely.

That’s what made it different and it was the beginning of a new segment of sleeper super saloons. Nothing really competed with it at the time. Everything that came after followed this.

In 2021, I discovered and recreated a mind-blowing physical privacy project: a custom baseball cap fitted with infrared diodes that can hide you from surveillance cameras (hello, Flock!). It was an incredible experience, but unfortunately there weren’t enough buyers. I just stumbled across an old video from that time… The most fascinating (and slightly unsettling) part of this tech is that, in theory, you could make a facial-recognition camera see a completely different person instead of you. Pretty dangerous stuff! Do you think there’s still demand for devices like this? 🤔

For a lot of us in the 70s and 80s it was the catalog that came in the mail, the Wish Book you circled until the pages wore thin, Craftsman tools that outlived the first house you bought them for, Kenmore appliances that didn’t need replacing every four years, and a place your parents could walk in and walk out with school clothes, a washing machine, and a socket set in one trip. Sears didn’t invent American middle-class life, but it packaged it. Quality you could point to. A catalog you could trust when you lived nowhere near a big city. Saturday mornings that smelled like floor wax and new denim. Christmas lists that felt possible. What we lost wasn’t only a retailer. We lost the habit of buying something once and expecting it to last. We lost the shared ritual of flipping those pages with a sibling and arguing over who got the last circle. We lost a store that treated a $12 wrench and a $400 refrigerator with the same seriousness.
