The Gators open practice with a game where the dribble doesn't exist. One minute. Offense tags as many defenders as possible. Ball movement only. Dick DeVenzio would have loved this. In STUFF Good Players Should Know, he wrote: "You can slow it down and set it up with a... pass. You can get on balance without dribbling. You can think better when you DON'T have the ball and put more pressure on the defense, too." Take the dribble away and there's nowhere to hide. You can't pound the ball while you decide. You have to catch on balance, see the floor early, and talk — because the ball can only move as fast as your teammates know where you're going. DeVenzio called go-nowhere dribbles "P-dribbles" and warned that every needless bounce means fewer perfectly timed passes and fewer teammates willing to cut. Cutthroat 5v5, 4v4 This is a really fast and chaotic game that we got from Team USA. Our team loves it because you have to talk the entire time even when your team is off the floor. Start with 3 or 4 teams: ●One team starts on offense. ●One team starts on defense. ●One or two teams are waiting on the baseline. - Play one possession. -If the offense scores: They stay on offense and earn 1 point. The defense sprints off, and the next team comes on defense. -If the defense gets a stop: They immediately transition to offense. Too much focus on overloaded practices, rondos and positional play inevitably leads to quick play and Group possession focus type outcomes. Also when do you let your players practice moving at full speed with the ball? This is where ball Mastery comes in and 1v1, 2v2 & 3v3 practices. I say the players I work with all the time. The reason Ruben Amorin needed “legs or ground eater” was because he never believed in players playing close to one another and keeping the ball for a long time. We often launched the ball to our strikers to beat press, he did the same at Sporting CP with Gyokeres and that caused our team needing to run so much because when we lose the second ball, we were in trouble.. It’s more about athleticism to him than techniques.. He never wanted players that are comfortable on the ball instead he likes players that can pick long passes so they can move the ball as quickly forward as possible and that’s why he never rated Mainoo.. Now Carrick has a different approach to football which is for players to play close to one another, take regulated and calculated risk instead of throwing the ball in the air at every chance which limits his need for “ground eaters” and increases his needs for actual ballers, guys that are comfortable on the ball and know how to pass it at the same time.

He asked one of his starters: "How many minutes do you think you had the ball in your hands for the game?" The player said 15 minutes when he had played 30. The real numbers? "A backcourt player, for the most part, is probably 92% of the game gonna be played without the ball in their hands. Introducing the “Get” action in basketball to lacrosse! The “Get” is a 2man action where a player passes the ball to another player and sprints to go “Get” it back on a handoff. This action has similar concepts and reads to pick and roll, but the picker is actually the ball handler! In lacrosse, we have been experimenting with Gets because it creates so many interesting situations and reads for the players. The way we teach it in small sided games is to have one offensive player declare “I’m shut” and the defense has to face-guard him. From there we pick for the shut off player trying to spring them free for the Get. The ball handler has to engage and control their defender, anticipating the shut player trying to get open. The shut player can backdoor if being overplayed towards the get (rejecting the get), receive a flip, or continue curling around the ball getting open for a late pass. The ball handler can feed the reject, flip the ball, or fake the flip to attack the goal or make a late pass to the shut payer curling to the goal. I’ve seen examples of this run in men’s and women’s DI lacrosse at Ohio State and Northwestern, respectively and I’ve run this myself when I was coaching HS girls lacrosse. You will also see on this reel a sick application for Gets vs. a common big-little invert coverage where the short stick doesn’t go behind with his man and plays “Safety” in front of the net.
