The anchor is also designed to drag sand and embed into it.

Really interesting explanation. My doubt is this: the sea is never calm. There’s always wind and current pushing the ship, so wouldn’t the anchor chain already be mostly taut? If that’s the normal state, when exactly does the “paperweight” / shock-absorber effect operate? Only at low loads? Would love to hear how sailors or engineers think about this.

Incorrect information. Not the chain. The anchor shape will make it dig into the bottom sea ground when it been pulled. The more water pull the boat, the deeper anchor dig in the ground. When to lift the anchor, the boat must be straight on the anchor to pull it up.

What physics applied when the anchor was tethered by hemp rope?

This is why anchors look small but boats don't drift ✍️

Other factors not considered: Plow or Rock Anchor. What is the sea floor that you are anchoring in? Tides, weather, also-I take point on this theory when using a Sea Anchor. Explain USCG standards of anchor chain/line in that instance.

Thanks, but I'll continue dropping my anchor straight down if that's alright with you.

I mean, yeah, there's math involved but do we really need to overthink ship anchoring? Seems simpler to just drop it and hope for the best. I'd rather not get tangled in math when all I wanna do is enjoy a day on the water, ya know?

That's very true. One more thing. Laying the anchor chain also causes the anchor flukes/"claws" to dig or bite deeper into the sea bed. This gives it more holding power.
