Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne has revealed that he held cordial talks with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Tuesday evening and is hopeful that Trinidad and Tobago will honour the remaining US$60 million owed to his country. This, despite a previous fall-out with Persad-Bissessar whom he criticised last year for labelling Caricom an “unreliable partner”. Yesterday’s conversation stems from the regional financial crisis triggered by the 2008 collapse of Colonial Life Insurance Company (CLICO) and British American Insurance Company (BAICO), which sent shockwaves across the Caribbean. The fallout was particularly severe in Trinidad and Tobago, where CLICO was headquartered, and across several OECS member states. Browne noted that an initial US$40 million payment was made during Persad-Bissessar’s first term in 2010. He said the latest discussions centred on structuring repayment of the outstanding balance over an extended period, in a way that would not place undue strain on Port of Spain’s finances. There are blatant attempts to undermine ongoing efforts to confront narco-traffickers and organised crime. My Government remains steadfast in its partnership with the United States as we take decisive, coordinated action to stem the flow of drugs, guns, and human trafficking into T&T. The Caribbean cannot be called a zone of peace - and Trinidad and Tobago will not be one - so long as powerful cartels continue to wreak havoc and destroy lives. For too long, their illicit trade has driven our nation to become one of the most violent places on earth. Upon assuming office, I made it clear that I would not stand idly by and allow criminals to terrorise and traumatise our citizens. My Government will continue to stand firmly with the United States and strengthen our national security systems to ensure a safe and secure Trinidad and Tobago.

I myself have written to Rajnath Singh ji and also given suggestions on how this can be done while respecting environmental laws and tribal laws. We have the issue of coal mining in rich forest areas of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. We have the problem of the unpredictability of the monsoon, which is attributable to climate change. We have the problem of heat stress and the issue of the Aravalli Hills. We have to balance environmental concerns with growth imperatives. We need faster economic growth and higher GDP growth. But in the name of ease of doing business, the Modi government is basically knocking down environmental laws, knocking out all environmental regulations, and weakening environmental standards. Pollution is no longer just an environmental issue; it is fundamentally related to public health issues. I totally get the sentiment that Cavan needs to play more, given the situation (with his departure to Europe somewhat imminent). However, I don’t know that a game in Trinidad and Tobago, especially while already up by a comfortable margin, is the best situation for him to come on.
