I travelled through Great Nicobar today. These are the most extraordinary forests I have ever seen in my life. Trees older than memory. Forests that took generations to grow. The people on this island are equally beautiful - both the adivasi communities and the settlers - but they are being robbed of what is rightfully theirs. The government calls what it is doing here a “Project.” What I have seen is not a project. It is millions of trees marked for the axe. It is 160 square kilometres of rainforest condemned to die. It is communities that have been ignored while their homes have been snatched away. This is not development. This is destruction dressed in development’s language. So I will say it plainly, and I will keep saying it: what is being done in Great Nicobar is one of the biggest scams and gravest crimes against this country’s natural and tribal heritage in our lifetime. It must be stopped. And it can be stopped - if Indians choose to see what I have seen.

An American influencer recently shared a video of Riau province in Sumatra on social media, claiming, “This is what deforestation looks like from above.” While his intention was good, the footage actually shows an area after the harvesting of a monoculture pulpwood plantation. I know this because I was Sustainability MD of a large pulp and paper company for almost 15 years. The barren land is not a result of natural forest clearing; it was likely deforested and converted into plantation land by the company more than six years ago. We need to stop deforestation and work towards restoring the damaged ecosystem.

Under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Federal Government is committed to completing the National Library Headquarters in Abuja. Over the past few months, the Federal Ministry of Education has held several meetings with members of the National Library team and its contractors to discuss the resumption of the project. The project, which was designed in 1981 and began construction in 2006, is the third (3rd) of three national monuments (the National Ecumenical Centre and the National Mosque) that has yet to be completed. This week, my team and I toured the project site with the CEO of the National Library, the project’s architect, and contractor to assess the progress made before construction paused in 2012. By June 2025, we will proceed with Phase 1 of the project, which will include the completion of Basement Levels 1 and 2, the Ground Floor, the Second Floor, and the building's external works and furnishings. Mr. President is deeply passionate about Nigeria’s human capital development, of which education is an integral part. The President has also instructed TETFund to allocate funding towards the project to ensure its resumption and completion. With a National Library, we can provide all Nigerians with a communal learning environment to help them grow and become their best selves.

Whose strategy is he advancing when he tries to block India’s answer to China’s String of Pearls, the very port that will end our dependence on Colombo and Singapore for transhipment? Now let us bring out the data Rahul Gandhi will never put in his videos. The total area of Great Nicobar Island is around 910 square kilometres. Out of this, 853 square kilometres, that is 92 percent of the entire island, is constitutionally protected as Tribal Reserve under the 1956 regulation. The project footprint is 166 square kilometres. That is roughly 18 percent of the island, and the tribal reserve remains overwhelmingly intact. The tribal population Rahul Gandhi is suddenly weeping for is approximately 1,200. The Shompen, around 200. The Nicobarese, around 1,000. Eight hundred square kilometres of pristine, protected forest stays exclusively reserved for them. Untouched. Guaranteed by law. And here comes the inconvenient truth that destroys his entire video. The Tribal Council itself has issued a No Objection Certificate to the Government of India. The very communities Rahul Gandhi claims to speak for have already given written consent. The Gram Sabhas have passed resolutions. Before this project, many towns in the region had to be relocated multiple times due to encroaching sand. For instance, the town of Qira in Xinjiang had to move three times in its history, with sand dunes once approaching as close as 1.5 kilometers from the town center. This is easily one of human history's most ambitious and grandest ecological engineering projects. It's insane when you think about it: completely containing a desert the size of Germany! And it's also insane how little attention this has received globally: sadly we've apparently lost the capacity to be impressed by such a project, let alone have the boldness of vision to conceive of one ourselves.
