The vast majority of hunters would be better off if they taped their magnification at 8x-10x power. Period. Cranking it higher is one of the most common mistakes in the woods. More magnification doesn’t make you more accurate. It makes you more likely to blow a wind call. More likely to miscall whether you hit the animal. More likely to be incapable of getting a follow-up shot. And for a lot of guys, it cranks up the buck fever, because the wobble zone looks bigger and more erratic than it actually is.

Even when not driving, men are more careless; twice as many men compared with women are killed simply crossing the street. Maleness is by far the biggest risk factor for violence. Men kill men massively more often than women kill women—on average, 26 times more often. These patterns extend beyond the U.S. When data on violent crime are gathered from around the world, the result is utterly clear and amazingly consistent. Crime statistics from Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Scotland, Uganda, and the United Kingdom all exhibit the same basic pattern.
