That 13-mile “bulge” on each side works like a stabilizing flywheel, helping keep the planet’s axis steady. A Martian Eclipse What's that passing in front of the Sun? It looks like a moon, but it can't be Earth's Moon, because it isn't round. It's the Martian moon Phobos. The featured video was taken from the surface of Mars in 2022 by the Perseverance rover. Phobos, at 11.5 kilometers across, is 150 times smaller than Luna (our moon) in diameter, but also 50 times closer to its parent planet. In fact, Phobos is so close to Mars that it is expected to break up and crash into Mars within the next 50 million years. In the near term, the low orbit of Phobos results in more rapid solar eclipses than seen from Earth. The featured video is shown in real time -- the transit really took about 40 seconds, as shown. The videographer -- the robotic rover Perseverance (Percy) -- continues to explore Jezero Crater on Mars, searching not only for clues to the watery history of the now dry world, but evidence of ancient microbial life. NOAA have not updated the publicly available magnetic pole data [1] since 2020. The December 2023 State of the Geomagnetic Field report [2] does, however, contain some clues as to how things are progressing: "Since 2020, the north magnetic dip pole has moved at an average speed of 41 km/yr [~36.8° per century], and the south magnetic dip pole at 9 km/yr [~8.1° per century]. Neither underwent any noticeable change in direction. /// The South Atlantic Anomaly, where the geomagnetic field intensity is lowest, has continued to deepen (by about 25 nT at surface level) and move westward (its center moved by about 20 km at surface level) in the past year. /// In the SAA the intensity of the field is about one-third of that near the magnetic poles." By this account, the current geomagnetic excursion continues unabated. [1] [2]

Solar System bodies make deep space exploration more fuel efficient! Today’s video shows the Psyche spacecraft gaining speed and changing its trajectory with minimal fuel spent due to a gravity assist from Mars in May 2026. Mars has an average orbital speed of almost 87,000 km/h (54,000 mph) around the Sun. Its orbital motion and its gravity allowed Mars to pull Psyche along with it, increasing the spacecraft’s speed. Gravity assists have been used since 1959’s Luna 3 mission to allow for spacecraft (the Voyagers, Cassini) to reach farther than they could with fuel alone. This assist helped the Psyche spacecraft on its journey to the Psyche asteroid, which it will reach in 2029. While passing Mars, the spacecraft tested instruments that will analyze the asteroid’s composition and magnetic field. What would it look like to fly past Triton, the largest moon of planet Neptune? Only one spacecraft has ever done this -- and the images of this dramatic encounter have been gathered into a video. In 1989, the Voyager 2 robotic spacecraft shot through the Neptune system with cameras blazing. Triton is slightly smaller than Earth's Moon but has ice volcanoes and a surface rich in frozen nitrogen. The first sequence in the video shows Voyager's approach to Triton, which, with the exception of an overall false green tint, appears in approximately true color. The mysterious cantaloupe terrain seen under the spacecraft soon changed from light to dark, with the terminator of night crossing underneath. After closest approach, Voyager pivoted to see the departing moon, now visible as a diminishing crescent. Fun stuff.. Antarctica is 6,660 to 6,666 miles long from the back side of the plate boundary where the volcano is imaged..... out to the tip on the opposite side of the plate... As if that wasn't strange enough, the whole plate is in the shape of a 5 sided pentagon starfort bastion fort shape! You pass directly over the South pole when measuring by the way!

However, the polarity of Polaris changes over time due to the Earth's movement, known as precession. Different stars become "polar" at different times in history. After 2100, our current North Star will begin to gradually move away from its northernmost point in the sky, and by 4000, its place will be taken by the star Alrai (Gamma Cephei).
