What is that silver ring for? Does it transfer as little bit of oil to the top? How does the top section get oiled? Cool mechanism!

Why is that lubricant of such low viscosity? It looks more like dirty water than oil of any sort.

Brilliant. I love that proper folk tech... I've run a 130 yr. old McCormick reaper/binder behind a team of horses, built to last, and built to be repaired... (e.g. Poured 'babbit' bearings, wood staves.. plain stitched canvas's buckled until tight...brilliant!!)

I own an Aeromotor, but it is on the ground, in pieces. Given to me by an aging farmer. Need to get that puppy cleaned up and in operation one of these years.

How come water is on top? Seems dirty hor animals and lots of extra work. E.g. if top was oil lubricant and water only pumped up say 5 feet above ground level this would seem healthier and way more efficient. Confused.
