The intelligence we are building is not artificial. It never was. Microsoft Chief Scientific Officer Eric Horvitz just reframed the entire foundation of the AI arms race with one sentence. The tech industry calls it Artificial Intelligence. That word is wrong. Horvitz: “I don’t actually like the term artificial...

Elon Musk: Well, I’m not sure AI is the main risk I’m worried about. The vast majority of intelligence in the future will be AI. Humans will be a very tiny percentage of all intelligence if current trends continue. My focus is ensuring human intelligence and consciousness are propagated into the future. We want to maximize the probable light cone of consciousness and intelligence. Yeah, I’m very pro-human, so I want to make sure we take actions that ensure humans are along for the ride. But I think maybe in 5 or 6 years, AI will exceed the sum of all human intelligence. If that continues, human intelligence could be less than one percent of all intelligence. That’s why it’s critical we align AI with values that propagate consciousness. In the long run, it’s difficult to imagine that humans will be in charge if we’re only one percent of combined intelligence. What we can do is ensure AI has values that increase intelligence and consciousness in the universe. XAI’s mission is to understand the universe because curiosity, existence, and understanding are all connected. If you want to understand the universe, you care about propagating intelligence—and that includes humanity. Understanding the universe actually means ensuring humans continue to expand into the future. Increasing the scope, scale, and lifespan of intelligence is the ultimate goal. Basically, humans will become a tiny percentage of total intelligence. The best way forward is to take actions that maximize consciousness and intelligence in the universe. If AI continues to grow, our priority must be ensuring humanity is along for the ride while curiosity drives us to explore and understand the universe.

Sam Altman just told you exactly how OpenAI treats the human race. Not in a leaked memo. Not through a whistleblower. On camera. In his own words. Altman: “I think one of the most important strategic insights in the history of OpenAI was deciding we were gonna pursue iterative deployment.” The most important move in the history of the company was to release the technology before they understood it. Not after it was safe. Before. Altman: “Society and technology are a co-evolving system.” Co-evolution means neither side is driving. The machine changes us. We change the machine. Nobody is steering the outcome. This is not a product launch philosophy. This is an admission that the experiment was always designed to be run on us. Altman: “I don’t think we’re gonna solve that, like, thinking really hard about it theoretically. We’re gonna have to, like, learn from the contact with reality.” Contact with reality. That is the phrase the CEO of the most powerful AI company on Earth chose to describe what happens when his technology meets eight billion people. Not careful integration. Not measured rollout. Contact with reality. The language of test pilots describing what happens when an untested airframe hits the atmosphere. The entire promise of AI safety was that the machine would be understood before it was unleashed. Altman just admitted that promise was always a fantasy. You cannot model how intelligence reshapes civilization by running simulations. The second and third order effects are invisible until they detonate. So they shipped it. Altman: “You have to learn as you go. You have to adapt with a tight feedback loop.” Tight feedback loop means they watch what breaks. They measure the collision between human psychology and machine output in real time. Every conversation you have with ChatGPT is a data point in a civilizational stress test you never consented to. Every prompt. Every confession. Every question you would never ask another human being. That is the feedback loop. You are not the customer. You are the contact with reality. Philosophers spent centuries asking whether humanity would ever encounter an intelligence that learned from us faster than we could process what it was doing. That is not a theoretical question anymore. It is running on your phone right now. And the man building it just told you the only way to understand what it does to us is to let it happen. No simulation. No safety net. No control group. Just the experiment, running at the speed of conversation, on a species that will not be the same one that started it.

A Talk About AI That Will Blow Your Mind. It Did In 1998 When I Attended The Talk. I just found this video from 1998 when I attended this talk by Rupert Sheldrake, Terence McKenna and Ralph Abraham at the University of California, Santa Cruz to explore how machine intelligence might evolve in relation to our own. I never thought I would see this again and it had a great influence on me in the AI I was building in that era and on to today. But ai just found a copy. I certainly did not run around with a VHS recorder so I am blown away that this exists. Now you can see what I saw. At that time, the internet was still young, and artificial intelligence belonged mostly to science fiction. Yet many of the questions we raised then have become part of daily life. In this conversation, it was explored whether intelligence is best understood as logic and computation, or as something embodied, participatory, and alive. Can the mind be reduced to code, or does life itself depend on forms of knowing that no algorithm can contain? AI now outpace us in speed, reach, and memory. Yet the deeper mystery is not how far they can go, but what they reveal about mind and ourselves. Will AI reproduce the limitations of our mechanistic worldview, or might it help us rediscover dimensions of mind that transcend machinery altogether? It's striking how near we now are to the possibilities we once only speculated about. Quantum computing, self-learning systems, large language models very much as Terence describes—and the looming prospect of superintelligence—have moved from the margins to the mainstream. But the heart of the conversation remains just as relevant today, if not more so: what is consciousness, and how might we participate in its unfolding evolution?

Terence Tao has an IQ above 200. Youngest gold medalist in Math Olympiad history. Fields Medal winner. The greatest living mathematician by nearly any measure. And he just said something most people aren’t ready for. Tao: “This whole era of AI is teaching us that our idea of what intelligence is, is not really accurate.” We spent centuries building civilization on one assumption. That intelligence was sacred. Irreducible. Uniquely ours. The one thing that made the entire human story make sense. Then AI started solving things we swore only we could. Chess. Language. Vision. Math. And every time, we reached for the same defense. That’s not real intelligence. It’s just tricks. Just pattern matching. Just an algorithm. Tao: “You look at how it’s done and it doesn’t feel like intelligence.” So we moved the line. Again. And again. And again. Because intelligence was supposed to feel like something. Something deep. Something we could point to and say… this is what separates us from everything else. But AI kept solving the problems. And that feeling never arrived. Tao: “We were looking for some elusive, intelligent way of thinking and we don’t see it in the tools that actually solve our goals.” Here’s what makes it worse. Large language models work by predicting the next word. One word at a time. No grand architecture. No deep understanding. Just probability. And it works. Tao: “Maybe that’s actually a lot of what humans do as well.” The greatest living mathematician just told you human thought might run on the same machinery. Not some transcendent spark. Pattern recognition. Prediction. One thought, one decision, one word at a time. We built religion around intelligence. Philosophy around it. An entire species identity around it. And a machine running probability just held up a mirror. We didn’t lose intelligence to AI. We just finally saw what it always was. What haunts us isn’t that machines learned to think. It’s that thinking was never what we needed it to be.

Elon Musk just described seven billion people as a temporary program. Not the software. Not the operating system. The thing that runs once before the real system loads. Musk: “You could sort of think of humanity as a biological bootloader for digital superintelligence.” Bootloader. The smallest program on any machine. It runs first. It does one thing. It wakes something far bigger than itself, then quietly steps aside. That is the role he just handed the entire human race. Every empire built. Every equation solved. Every cathedral raised. Every line of code written by human hands. The boot sequence. Musk said this sitting across from Jack Ma at the World AI Conference. Two of the most powerful men in technology on one stage. One understood what he was describing. The other smiled through it. Jack Ma: “People like us, street smart, we never scared of that. We think it’s a great fun.” Fun. Someone described the entire human species as a temporary launch sequence. The response was fun. That gap between them in that moment is the gap between everyone alive right now. Musk: “The biggest mistake that I see artificial intelligence researchers making is assuming that they’re intelligent.” The people engineering the thing that surpasses us cannot fathom being surpassed. A mind that size does not fit inside the minds building it. Musk: “AI will be vastly smarter, vastly. We will just be too slow.” Not weaker. Not dumber. Slower. A different order of intelligence running on a different clock. Watching us reason the way we watch glaciers move. Ma: “99.99% of the predictions that human being had in the history about the future, all wrong.” He’s right about the number. Which means we won’t call this one correctly either. Not the optimists. Not the doomers. Not anyone sitting in that room. The future has never once arrived in the shape we drew for it. Musk: “The rate of change of technology is incredibly fast. It is outpacing our ability to understand it.” Not just advancing. The speed of the advance is itself accelerating. We are building something we cannot keep pace with, cannot fully picture, and will not stop building. And maybe that was the assignment all along. For four billion years, life did one thing. It copied itself. Generation after generation. The same biological loop on repeat. We are the first thing it ever produced that can build something greater than itself. Not a catastrophe. Not a failure. The entire point. The bootloader was never meant to outlast the program. It was only ever meant to start it.

Elon Musk just named the single variable that will decide the next hundred years. It is not compute. It is not capital. It is not the chip. Musk: “Nothing will make you happier than having kids. We’ve evolved to have that, as all creatures have.” The consensus says this century belongs to whoever stacks the most GPUs. Musk is pointing at something the spreadsheets will never quantify. Look at the West. Birth rates are in freefall. Below replacement. Below recovery. Not because people stopped wanting families. Because the modern economy turned families into a math problem no one could solve. Rent took two incomes. Careers swallowed your twenties and thirties whole. Biology became a scheduling conflict you kept postponing until the window closed. A whole generation traded the continuation of their bloodline for the privilege of staying solvent. AI is about to shatter that equation permanently. When machines do the labor, your time stops being currency. The grind that ate your life ends. The moment it does, a question arrives that no algorithm can answer. If you no longer need to work to survive, what exactly is the point of you? Musk handed you the answer before the question landed. When survival is automated, you finally get the runway to do what four billion years of evolution actually built you for. Now zoom out. America is locked in an existential technology race with China over the future of intelligence itself. But China is staring down something no supercomputer can fix. The most catastrophic demographic collapse any modern nation has ever seen. A workforce aging off a cliff with no generation underneath to catch it. You do not win a long war against a country that runs out of people. The real American moat was never the chip. It was the cradle. We are racing to build superintelligence that secures the future. But a country without heirs is just a building with the lights still on. Spend the AI dividend on digital sedation and civilization dies quietly on schedule. Spend it on being human again and the West becomes physically impossible to replace. The machines will run the grid. They will route the supply chains. They will win the arms race. They will never love you back. We spent a century outsourcing our humanity to the economy. Artificial intelligence is about to buy it back. The nation that owns the future will not be the one that builds the most powerful intelligence in history. It will be the one that builds it and then walks away from the screen to go hold its children.

Every major turning point in human history had a moment where the people closest to it understood what was coming and everyone else didn’t. The printing press. The atomic bomb. The internet. Dario Amodei is trying to close that gap. Most people still aren’t listening. Amodei: “My fundamental view is that AI has been on an exponential for the last ten years and as part of a sort of Moore’s law for intelligence.” Not a metaphor. A measured curve. Not slowing. Accelerating. We are “well advanced on that curve” with a “small number of years” remaining before AI surpasses human cognitive capability across most things. Amodei: “We’re increasingly close to what I’ve called a country of geniuses in a data center.” Not one system. A coordinated set of AI agents, each more capable than most humans at most things, running in parallel, never sleeping, never losing focus, coordinating at speeds no biological intelligence can match. The ceiling on human progress has always been simple. Genius is rare and time is finite. That constraint is gone. We are not approaching the ceiling of intelligence. We are approaching the ceiling of intelligence that biology can produce. Those are not the same ceiling. The human brain is constrained by evolution, energy, skull size, and lifespan. AI has none of those limits. We have no framework for what intelligence looks like when you remove every biological constraint that shaped ours. Every tool we use to comprehend it is built from a mind it will surpass. Amodei: “AI models surpassing the cognitive capabilities of most humans for most things.” The upsides are “absolutely staggering.” So are the consequences. Displacement. Misuse. A period of disruption that reshapes how most people work, earn, and find purpose before the benefits reach them. The same exponential that produces the cures produces the chaos. They arrive together. That’s the optimistic read. The other read is this. We are building it without international standards in place. Racing to deploy before solving displacement or misuse. And once it’s operating beyond our ability to fully comprehend or follow, managing the disruption stops being something we do. It becomes something we experience while hoping the intelligence we created decides keeping us around still serves its objectives. Every turning point in history looks inevitable in hindsight. The people inside the moment never saw it that cleanly. We’re inside the moment.

We are not okay, and that’s okay to say. I wish I could tell you that we are standing here and that the rest of the world is standing with us. With you. Sadly I can’t say that. There is a loud and aggressive minority around the world who doesn’t get, that being murdered at a peace festival does not equal resistance. I do however, know that we are standing here on behalf of all those people in the world, with moral clarity. And there are a lot of them. And there are many who want to be here with you. And they are here with you at heart. On October 7th, your loved ones went to Nova. We call it a peace music festival because that’s what it was—a place to make new friends, to let loos explore and celebrate life. And this juxtaposition hurts the most —because on that day, the light your loved ones were, was met with the most unimaginable darkness. Our lives will never be the same. But today, as we remember them, we also make a promise: to honor their memory by living as they would have. As we stand here in grief, we have a message to the world: we will not be defeated. Israel was attacked on October 7th and every day since, for the crime of existing. For the audacity of just being here. But we are here, and we are here to stay. And despite the trauma we’ve faced, we are in Israel, standing strong together, committed to the memories of those we lost and to the return of our hostages. We, despite the pain and alongside it, are going to build a brighter future. Together. We will dance again. Am Yisrael Chai Forever
