Elon Musk: I didn't think SpaceX would succeed – and it almost didn't. “We started off developing a small rocket, which was kind of a scale model version and proceeded to have three failed launches in a row. For various technical reasons, the first three launches did not succeed in reaching orbit. Launches 2 and 3 did get to space, but they didn't achieve enough speed to reach orbital velocity. It was in 2008, we were heading into the recession, and we had one rocket left. Fortunately, in late 2008, that fourth launch did work and we made it to orbit and then we won a NASA contract after that. Fortunately things worked out. But if that fourth launch had not worked, then SpaceX wouldn't be around. So it was very close call. In fact, when I started I thought, okay, I think I've got enough money for three launches. Yesterday our mass here on the International Space Station shrank a bit, as we said goodbye to the SpaceX Dragon-34 cargo vehicle and the bounty of science that she brought us. It was a busy but very fruitful month. Here’s how she looked: 1) The night pass just prior to undocking, awash in the red glow of its navigation light, with long exposure highlighting the night sky, air glow and some city lights. 2) Matching the aurora that happened to dance by in the night pass just prior to undocking. 3) Timelapse as she detaches from the ISS and disappears out of view.

They were all good at singing and dancing, so we didn’t really think of each other as rivals or contestants. We were all just friends. Just singing and dancing together, learning together. Elon Musk: My initial plan was not to start a rocket company. I just wanted to fund a one-time Oasis mission to Mars. “I started off initially with the idea of doing something in the space exploration arena. In fact, it wasn't actually with the idea of creating a company. It was initially with the thought of spurring interest in sending people to Mars. So I put together this idea called Mars Oasis, which was to send a small greenhouse to the surface of Mars and get people excited about the idea of going there and thus increase NASA's budget in order to make it happen. As I got more and more into that, I discovered that the real issue was that the cost of space transportation was really high, and it was getting worse. So we're used to technology getting better every year, but in some arenas it actually does not. It gets worse, particularly when you consider that in 1969 we were able to go to the moon and then we were unable to go beyond low Earth orbit. And now with the space shuttle retired, we're not even able to go to Earth orbit at all, even with people. That was not the right trajectory. So I actually went to Russia three times to look at buying an ICBM to launch this mission. Just very crazy. After my third trip of trying to negotiate with the Russians to buy an ICBM and I did actually get a deal, so figured out what it would cost and everything. But I concluded that my initial assumption had been wrong, that it was not a question of trying to generate more will to explore. Because I think the United States in particular is distillation of the human spirit of exploration. Space exploration is fundamental to the American psyche. But people really need to believe that it can be done and it's not going to break the bank if it does. So that's when I decided to start a rocket company. 🐰 do you remember that time? i think it was around when we were about to debut. we were practicing late at night, from like 9 pm until 3 am and we kept hearing strange noises outside. back then even as trainees, we already had some fans who liked us, so people would sneak around, open the door a little, and peek in. 🐰 but since we weren’t supposed to be revealed yet, we thought, “what is that? did fan come in again?” and if we went out, it might cause problem, so our dance teacher went out to check. then the teacher suddenly came back in saying, “omg, what was that, what was that?” looking scared we asked, “why? what happened?” and they said it was too scary so we went to check. 🐰 on the stairs, there were albums of another artist, and each one had an x mark on it, placed step by step along the staircase. 🐱it looked like some kind of curse ritual or something. 🐰when we saw it, we got chills right away. but we were so scared we couldn’t even think to clean it up, so we all just went back inside, completely shaken like “what do we do now?” what did we end up doing? i don’t even remember. 🐰that’s as much as i can recall. i just remember the chills from back then. it was right when we were about to be revealed, too. it was really scary. 🐰the albums were placed neatly on each stair, one by one, all with x marks on them. there were a lot of scary moments like that.

It’s in a town in the south of England, right by the sea. We stayed there for a little bit and ran into each other. It was like a little community of student kids back then. FNC Boaster: “These events are, as you can probably imagine, quite tiring. We go from the upper bracket into three games in a row for the final days. That, on top of lots of media, lots of features, lots of just random stuff that we do. Not to mention the fact that when we go into our games, there’s a lot of adrenaline. After every game, my body aches and my head hurts, and then we have to somehow get to sleep, and then we’ve got to wake up early and stuff. So there’s loads of factors into this. It’s not just simply, you go in and you play. And I think we started slow today, especially on Corrode and Lotus. A big map was Lotus for us, and we weren’t able to, just everything wasn’t going our way. The Odin was completely annihilating us. Then when we got to Abyss, we were like, ‘This is the last chance.’ And I felt very confident that we could win this one, because I felt like I knew everything they did on the attack side. And then, what were we like 1–11 down or something? I was like, ‘Oh bloody hell, this one’s going to be a tough one, isn’t it?’ We managed to do it, and then I was like, ‘Holy guacamole, the dream is alive!’ And it felt amazing, hearing the crowd and being able to just do that, because it would’ve been so disappointing of a final to just bomb out there. But in the FNATIC way, we fight back. Ascent, we’re starting to feel the kind of momentum. And then it gets to Sunset, a map that was the one kind of perma-ban we had, but we had some stuff on it. Unfortunately, it was just the crucial map for us to get the win, and some of the rounds just didn’t go our way, and that’s how VALORANT goes, you know. It felt like the rounds that we needed to win, we lost, and then they had an ultimate the next round, and that’s how brutal it is on defense. If we had just been able to win one of those rounds, like the bonus round, holy guacamole, we would’ve been loving life. And it was the difference of like a 1v1 in the end. So yeah, I mean, we tried our best. That’s why I’m not that [sad]. I am sad, obviously, but I’m not like how I was in Toronto, because I felt like we pushed, we tried our best, and I’m very happy with the boys. Sometimes you watch something so simple that teaches you a huge amount. This is one of those videos. It about the current hot topic….the Moon, and it puts everything into perspective. This video makes clear something I didn’t know and demonstrates it in a simplistic but brilliant way that we can all relate to. The takeaway from it……space is beyond vast and we’re not even at step 1 of starting to explore it. #space #moon

I already have whatever app I’m using.’ And so we were having a hard time getting other people to try it.” Jason recalls a period of 3-4 weeks sitting around thinking, “We like this, but maybe no one else does.” Then they figured out their growth unlock: “The unlock for us was inviting people to give feedback on the app, as opposed to saying, ‘Try this thing out we’re selling to you.’ What we actually did was we went to the Final Fantasy 14 subreddit, and we got one of our friends to make a post on the subreddit basically saying, ‘Hey, I’m trying out this new voice over IP app. What do y’all think about it?’” Jason continues: “People found it on Reddit, clicked on that link, went into the server, and then they were talking to us and trying it out. And they went back to the subreddit and were like, ‘Hey, this is pretty cool. I met the devs. They seem pretty cool.’ We got 50 users that day from that post and then that 50 turned into 100 the next day and it sort of started to snowball. Jason Citron on the growth hack that got Discord its first few thousand users “We started working on [Discord] in January 2015, and within I’d say two months, some of our friends were very excited about it but we didn’t really have any users. It was pretty clear they wanted to use it, it just wasn’t exactly correct. We rebuilt the voice chat engine three times, for example. But I’d say within 3-4 months, we had 20 DAU that weren’t us.” However, as Jason explains, growth stalled after those first 20 users: “We were like, ‘How do we get the word out?’ Because everyone was actually very skeptical about a group chat app for gaming. People would say, ‘This is the dumbest idea ever, no one is going to use this.’ And even people who played games, many of them thought, ‘Why would I want this? We did a much bigger job than we said we were going to do because we did all the outer areas and everything. We did a beautiful job. This was pure vandalism. It's an amazing thing that we did. So it was built in 1922. That's 100 years more ago. I just had pictures taken. It's reflective. And then we're going to let a little water out because you have to let the water out to fix it. It won't take long. We may do it before July 4th or we may do it just after July 4th. Now we have it a little bit fenced off because we have a big fireworks display and tonight I'm making a speech. And people like my speeches, but I guess we're going to have a lot of people over there. One of the greatest opera singers in the world, we think he's great. Lee Greenwood's going to be singing our favorite song, and we have a lot of great things. They took razor blades and knives and they cut patches like that 350 feet long. A lot of them are like 1 foot 1 foot 1 foot.
