The Katikkiro of Buganda recently made a statement that cannot go unchallenged. While speaking at a public event, he urged Ugandans to vote only for individuals with prior political or leadership experience. To many, this wasn’t just a harmless suggestion—it was a thinly veiled jab at Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi... Ssentamu, better known as Bobi Wine, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who stepped into politics from a background in music and activism rather than government. This commentary is my direct response—not just to the Katikkiro, but to all who believe that experience in traditional political structures is a prerequisite for national leadership. While his remarks may sound reasonable on the surface, they reflect a narrow and outdated view of leadership—one that ignores history, reality, and the dynamic potential of new voices in politics. Experience alone doesn’t equal effectiveness. Uganda, like many other nations, has had no shortage of leaders with decades of experience—and yet, many have presided over systems plagued by corruption, inequality, and stagnation. Meanwhile, outsiders like Bobi Wine bring something experience alone cannot: authenticity, courage, and a deep connection to the people. It is therefore inaccurate to interpret his comments as an endorsement of authoritarianism or the abandonment of democracy. His message was simply that effective leadership sometimes requires firmness, courage, and the willingness to make difficult decisions in the national interest. Kenya remains a constitutional democracy governed by the Constitution, the rule of law, and regular elections, and no leader can operate outside that framework. Strong, decisive leadership and democratic governance can coexist when exercised within constitutional limits and with the welfare of citizens at heart.

A few weeks ago hundreds of proud, hopeful Jamaicans gathered at the Morant Bay Urban Centre, smiling, cheering, and witnessing history. After decades of neglect and underinvestment, St. Thomas finally has a development it can call its own. The Morant Bay Urban Centre is a symbol of possibility, a long-overdue answer to the cries of a “forgotten parish”. While the people of St. Thomas turned out in their numbers to celebrate this milestone, and the rest of Jamaica watched with pride and satisfaction, the Leader of the Opposition chose to belittle, refering to a “so called” centre. This remark goes much deeper than just politics, it speaks to the heart of the Opposition, unable to acknowledge the development happening in our country. Unwilling to witness and appreciate what this means for our people. This is the difference between a government that builds and an opposition that tears down. The difference between leadership that sees Jamaica and leadership that sees only politics. And leadership that focuses on what is good for Jamaica and leadership that focuses on what is good for themselves. We believe in development for every parish and progress for every Jamaican. And while others may scoff from the sidelines, we’ll continue doing the real work of nation-building, because Jamaica deserves nothing less.

This is not the only vision for what it looks like to have politics in this country—that is so divorced from the needs and wants of everyday people. And what we are looking to show in New York City is an alternative to what has led so many to become disenchanted with the political process. We want to show that not only can government work, but it must, and that at its core, our responsibility is to working people—to ensure that we’re doing everything to make their lives easier. That has to be what drives our actions, and for too long, government has felt more like a distraction than a fulfillment of the needs of the people who’ve been left behind by the politics of today.

He essentially suggests that federalism doesn’t work—not just in Syria, but even in Iraq: But when you listen carefully to his reasoning, it seems that the experience of the Kurdistan Region has actually had a negative influence on how federalism is perceived, particularly in the Syrian context. Many often speculate about Syrian Kurdistan becoming like Iraqi Kurdistan, but what seems to be happening is the opposite: the Iraqi model may have led U.S. policymakers to reconsider the viability of federalism and lean against it. In other words, the Kurdistan Region’s experience may have inadvertently validated the argument that federalism is a slow path to independence and a source of ongoing tension with the central government—obstacles that can hinder both regional and national development. Seonghwa apparently was a secret agent that worked for the military police in his past life as he couldn’t answer to many of the questions and was deeply emotional throughout. Later, in a live he said it was a very hard experience for him and that for a while he really struggled after doing it. Before doing it the instructor explained it’s a case-by-case experience and that it wouldn’t feel like being hypnotised but the feelings from one’s subconscious might come out while still being aware of doing a past-life experience. In what can only be described as comments made by a man adrift from the realities of life for many carers, Varadkar went on to talk about his own willingness to care for family members into the future. He appeared not to realise the disparity between his own quality of life and means, and those of Carers who cannot work due to their caring responsibilities, many living below the poverty line and unable to afford proper care assistance and respite. Equally, Varadkar has not had to provide personal care for a seriously Ill or disabled relative according to this interview but expresses a confident view of himself into the future as a care provider, a fact that can only frustrate already frustrated carers around the country. As clarification, the Taoiseach did also say that where a person has no family or has high needs, the state may step in. This conditionality does suggest that disabled people with family must depend on them. Equally, there is an inference that where a person has high needs, the state will step in. This is not the experience of many carers in Ireland.

Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu’s BOBI WINE speech, president National Unity Platform However, for those of us with a broader perspective, the speech clearly demonstrates what is happening in the country. If there is no immediate change of course, the consequences will affect not only those who have committed atrocities but also innocent Ugandans. Kyagulanyi understands that removing a guerrilla leader who has been in power for 40 years is not an easy task. He may or may not take power soon, but that is not the only measure of success. Many of his core agendas have already made a significant impact: awakening Ugandans to their rights, empowering citizens to speak out, boldly confronting corruption, exposing the theft of taxpayers’ money, highlighting extrajudicial killings, torture, unlawful arrests, impunity, and nepotism. Today, musicians are earning better livelihoods, artists are more recognized, and several governance gaps have been addressed after being exposed. In many ways, the system has been forced to respond. It is far from over. With time, momentum, and the continued awakening of citizens, the advantage increasingly shifts in Kyagulanyi’s favor.
