This morning, The King and Queen were welcomed to a rainy Kirkcaldy for an event to mark the centenary of Kirkcaldy's War Memorial, a cornerstone of local heritage. Established in 1925 through local businessman John Nairn's donation in memory of his son Ian who died in WWI, this memorial has been the town's heart of remembrance for generations of Kirkcaldy families. Their Majesties opened a new Cairn, designed as a time capsule to be filled with items from local young people, connecting the town's past, present and future. His Majesty went on to visit the town’s art gallery where he also met community groups, including Multibank, a food bank project co-founded by Gordon Brown.

This community-based learning facility houses Barking Library and brings together a range of council services, and local groups. 💬 Their Majesties spent time with families and staff, who work at the centre to provide advice on employment, support those who are homeless, and encourage reading in the library.

In 2024, the orchard grew 6.8 tonnes of food for the community! 📚 At Nansledan School, the trio met staff and pupils on a tour of the school. Designed and built by the Duchy of Cornwall, the school was officially opened by His Majesty in March 2020. Nansledan is a 540-acre extension to the seaside town of Newquay, on Cornwall’s North Coast. Initiated in 2014, the project reflects the shared vision of The King and The Duke of Cornwall to create a new community for people, local businesses and the planet.

The Poppy Project, initiated by The Peacock Women’s Institute, commemorates the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. ☕️ In Bromham, The Queen unveiled the village’s new Community Hub, built to replace the local community centre that was lost in a fire. Featuring a café and flexible group spaces, the hub aims to reinvigorate village life, reducing isolation and supporting the mental wellbeing of residents.

Thank you to all who waited outside the Cathedral to say hello. 👋 The King was celebrating the local community and heritage skills around the Fenland Black Oak Table, crafted from a Jubilee Oak that had lay undisturbed in peat for 5,000 years. The table has hosted numerous groups from across the region, including the Liberty Jamboree, MusicShare, and volunteers from the Cathedral’s embroiderers and City’s Foodbank.
