The Lagos State Government has inaugurated a Special Task Force to combat indiscriminate waste dumping across the metropolis, particularly on roads, bus stops, garages, and lay-bys. As part of the initiative, members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria... (RTEAN) will work with government agencies as “waste police” to monitor and report environmental violations. Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi , emphasized that tackling environmental abuse requires collaboration between government and transport unions, warning that offenders will face sanctions. He also directed union leaders to ensure cleanliness in their garages and parks, discourage indiscriminate trading, and remove illegal structures that contribute to waste generation. Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Sam Egube, highlighted the critical role of transport workers in maintaining public order and security, urging them to report suspicious activities and support efforts to keep Lagos clean and safe. LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, PhD , noted that Lagos generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily and called on transport unions to help prevent waste disposal on roads, promote proper waste management, and stop street trading around bus stops and newly constructed roads. Stakeholder Sola Giwa assured the unions of government support in enforcing sanitation standards, removing illegal shanties, and maintaining clean transport facilities. Today, we convened a strategic meeting with all the 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Area Chairmen, alongside selected members of the Lagos State Executive Council, to secure their support for the successful take-off and sustenance of the re-introduced Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise in the state. The meeting was in furtherance of our shared commitment to restoring the culture of cleanliness across Lagos. I emphasised that achieving a cleaner, flood-free and sustainable environment requires collaboration between the State Government, Local Governments and residents. Last month, Mr. Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, formally launched the re-introduced Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise as a call for Lagosians to take responsibility for their immediate environment. With Lagos generating about 13,000 to 14,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily, the challenge of waste management requires collective and consistent action. We already have market sanitation exercises every Thursday between 7am and 10am across the State. If markets, which are central to economic activity, can observe regular sanitation, it is only right that households and communities also embrace this culture. As part of the implementation strategy, State EXCO members, Local Government Chairmen and senior officials will be assigned to various locations to monitor compliance during the designated sanitation periods. A monitoring and enforcement team will also be deployed to ensure effectiveness. In addition, we will introduce a monthly award for the cleanest Local Government or LCDA, with incentives attached, to encourage healthy competition and reward commitment to environmental cleanliness. We also urged all Chairmen to intensify public enlightenment on proper waste disposal and discourage dumping refuse on roads, medians, open spaces, drainages and canals. I appreciate the commitment of the Conference 57 Chairman, Hon. Sesan Olowa Hon Abdulahi Sesan Olowa , and all 57 Chairmen who pledged their full support for the initiative. The Lagos State Government through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, and the British High Commission in Nigeria are set to collaborate on the generation of energy from solid waste as well as recycling for an improved economy. Solid waste management is a major issue for the State, as the State generates 13,000 – 15,000 tonnes of waste daily. We have also identified that the PSP waste collection system needs support in finding creative ways to manage dumpsites. It is important to mention that the Babajide Sanwo-Olu -led administration has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on environmental issues with private investors on ways to generate energy from dumpsites. The State is open to investment opportunities and partnerships. It is time for stakeholders to have pure work plans and be very realistic and deliberate about actions to combat the environmental scourge. The Clean Up of Lagos, getting rid of waste and reducing pollution is a shared vision and collective effort that demands out-of-the-box thinking and extreme discipline. When I moved Tokunbo Wahab to the role of Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, it was because I saw passion and pragmatism as well as the discipline required to do the difficult things. Working closely with LAWMA, LASEPA Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, as well as other agencies, they have hit the ground running in the efforts to clean up Lagos. This is a very good example of clearing and regenerating an illegal dumpsite in Amuwo Odofin. A lot of such projects are going on across the state and I need the support of ALL residents in achieving the success of this goal. Stop indiscriminate dumping. Bag your waste. Patronise PSP operators.

We engaged the market leadership on the best ways to restore environmental order and ensure full compliance with waste management regulations. I also conducted awareness sessions with the traders on the importance of maintaining cleanliness and working together to stop illegal dumping. We will continue to monitor the area closely to ensure full compliance and keep Kangemi clean and safe for everyone.

Lagos Transport Model Inspires Kano Transportation Commisioner Hon. Ibrahim Namadi, Kano State Commissioner of Transportation, led a delegation on a fact-finding mission to Lagos State to learn from its advancements in transportation infrastructure and network. Today marks another pivotal moment in our journey to transform waste management in Lagos. I had the honour of facilitating the signing of a landmark agreement between the Lagos State Government and ZoomLion Nigeria, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group. This partnership is a bold step forward in our collective effort to overhaul how we manage the over 13,000 tonnes of waste generated daily in our state. For decades, the Olusosun dumpsite has stood as a symbol of the burden of uncontrolled urban waste. Through this new agreement, we are on the cusp of a major breakthrough. A state-of-the-art Transfer Loading Station will be constructed at Olusosun, serving as a central hub to redirect 2,500 tonnes of daily waste to a newly planned Material Recovery Facility in Ikorodu. This will allow us to permanently close Olusosun - a move that not only improves public health and safety but also significantly reduces the environmental impact of open dumping. In Igando, the Solous III dumpsite will also witness a major shift. With a new recovery facility planned for Badagry, we’ll be relocating 1,500 tonnes of waste daily; showing our commitment to decentralising and modernising waste handling in Lagos. What excites me most is the impact this will have beyond cleaner streets. Over 5,000 jobs, both direct and indirect will be created through this project. From waste processing technicians to logistics and facility maintenance staff, we are opening up a whole new ecosystem around waste recovery and circular economy opportunities. At the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, we’ve always believed that Lagos’ environmental future must be built on innovation, collaboration, and a firm resolve to act. Comm. says the State Government will continue to pay special attention to waste conversion The quest to make good use of the high solid waste generated in Lagos State got another boost on Tuesday as the state expressed readiness to partner with some Sweden organizations on how to turn both solid waste and liquid waste to energy across the metropolis. Speaking during the meeting at Alausa, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab said the state will continue to pay special attention to waste management adding that waste is not a waste but remain one of the best resource every where. He said Waste to energy is a project that the State Government is willing to embark on in order to move the narrative forward in a progressive and productive way. "Our resolve from the beginning of this tenure is that whatever we have to engage in to manage and deploy our solid and liquid waste as a resource is a priority for this government as it will save Lagos but other neighbouring state" he said. The Commissioner stated that the Ministry which is a public facing ministry has resolved to embrace any project that will cut the carbon foot print in the state. He said the state being a coastal state is faces alot of challenges, one of which is the Atlantic Ocean rising at the peak of the rainy season adding that the state is also at the end of numerous tributaries where water is discharged into the lagoon all of which could lead to flooding in the state. He said lagos generates between 13,000 to 14,000 tonnes of waste per day and the state is open to suggestions about possible productive ways to turn it into a Resources and move the state forward. Wahab said lagos as a State is working to decongest the roads and make Lagos a 21st century mega city saying that the cause and effect on the environment is that these moves help to reduce the emissions on the long run. According to him, As a result of current energy crisis in Nigeria, this has caused the spike in the cost of PMS and its multiple effects on the economy. So if the Lagos State Government can go ahead with this project. it will solve half of the problem in the PMS high price in Lagos. "This project is something we have to pursue deliberately and diligently. Comm. says the State Government will continue to pay special attention to waste conversion The quest to make good use of the high solid waste generated in Lagos State got another boost on Tuesday as the state expressed readiness to partner with some Sweden organizations on how to turn both solid waste and liquid waste to energy across the metropolis. Speaking during the meeting at Alausa, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab said the state will continue to pay special attention to waste management adding that waste is not a waste but remain one of the best resource every where. He said Waste to energy is a project that the State Government is willing to embark on in order to move the narrative forward in a progressive and productive way. "Our resolve from the beginning of this tenure is that whatever we have to engage in to manage and deploy our solid and liquid waste as a resource is a priority for this government as it will save Lagos but other neighbouring state" he said. The Commissioner stated that the Ministry which is a public facing ministry has resolved to embrace any project that will cut the carbon foot print in the state. He said the state being a coastal state is faces alot of challenges, one of which is the Atlantic Ocean rising at the peak of the rainy season adding that the state is also at the end of numerous tributaries where water is discharged into the lagoon all of which could lead to flooding in the state. He said lagos generates between 13,000 to 14,000 tonnes of waste per day and the state is open to suggestions about possible productive ways to turn it into a Resources and move the state forward. Wahab said lagos as a State is working to decongest the roads and make Lagos a 21st century mega city saying that the cause and effect on the environment is that these moves help to reduce the emissions on the long run. According to him, As a result of current energy crisis in Nigeria, this has caused the spike in the cost of PMS and its multiple effects on the economy. So if the Lagos State Government can go ahead with this project. it will solve half of the problem in the PMS high price in Lagos. "This project is something we have to pursue deliberately and diligently. On behalf of the Lagos State government, the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lafarge Africa PLC for the collection of non-recyclable combustible waste round the state and landfill sites, a significant step towards achieving a zero waste future for Lagos State. Through this partnership, Lafarge Africa will collect and treat non-recyclable and combustible waste from companies and Lagos State dumpsites and divert it to its Ewekoro Plant for use as an alternative fuel for production. This landmark milestone will enable Lafarge Africa support The Lagos State Govt ’s vision of a cleaner Lagos in line with the Lagos Waste Management Authority’s ambitious zero waste to landfill objective. This new agreement reiterates the commitment of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration’s to continually reduce the quantum of waste that gets to landfills, ultimately leading to zero waste landfill sites. The state government is determined to continually pay special attention to wastes conversion in the state. The Lagos State Government in recent past had also signed MoU to help decommission existing landfill, MoU to convert waste to energy, MoU with a Dutch company to take off electronic waste. We are addressing the issues of waste frontally at the states; waste sorting is a culture and it is a culture that you must imbibe and build over time; separation of waste is here to stay. The MoU's benefits are wide-ranging, including the availability of reliable alternative fuel sources, cost efficiency, regulatory compliance, and alignment with ESG goals.
