The Laken Riley Act creates more problems than it solves. It makes the country less safe. And that's the point for Republicans - to make the immigration system more confusing and chaotic. Democrats should only support the bill if it's amended so that it actually works.

Republicans will make the country borrow another $4 trillion not for clean energy, not to promote health care, not to promote housing, but to pay for tax cuts. It does not sit well with my constituents and it should not sit well with yours either.

The law would require ICE to detain illegal aliens who are charged with theft. 170 Democrats voted against the bill, but the reason for that may not be what you think. We say 170 Democrats likely vote against it because the bill itself reads like an attack piece on Joe Biden and it seems to lack standing. If Republicans really wanted to make change, they should have left the political attacks out of the bill. You aren't going to get Democrats to support a bill that attacks Democrats. This is the problem with Congress today. They can't just pass laws without trying to demonize each other. What happened to Laken Riley shouldn't happen to anyone else. Today, I was honored to join Speaker Mike Johnson as he signed the first bill the 119th Congress will deliver to President Trump’s desk, the Laken Riley Act. I was proud to cosponsor this bill to prevent the horrific and brutal murder of additional innocent Americans at the hands of illegal alien thugs. Laken Riley would be alive today if it weren’t for the border invasion enabled by Joe Biden and the Democrats. I’m so glad President Trump will be signing this bill into law. Trump should send an invoice to the DNC. He is doing more for the Democratic Party than Democrats could pay him to do. Republicans actually passed a housing bill. One good thing for the millions of young people who cannot buy a home. Housing is the single biggest issue for voters under 40. It had bipartisan support. And Trump just shelved it. He decided to hold it up for an extreme voter ID bill so burdensome that his own Republicans don’t want it. He traded something everybody wants for something nobody asked for. Democrats couldn't write a better script. Send us the invoice, Donald.
