EV giant BYD just launched “Lingyuan”, a roof-mounted drone launch system built in collaboration with DJI, now available across all BYD models in China. At the tap of a button, the roof opens, a platform rises, and a DJI drone lifts off, even while the car is moving. It can launch at up to 25 km/h, follow the car at 54 km/h, and return autonomously from within a 2 km range. The drone docks into the vehicle’s rooftop bay, where it recharges automatically. The full package costs around ¥16,000 (~$2,200) and includes the drone, launcher, and companion apps, including video editing and AI-based posture recognition tools that can take photos around the car. But what's the point? Why not just stop the car, pull the drone out of the trunk, and shoot the video? What am I missing in this use case? 🤨

🚨🇨🇳🇨🇳Here are two of China's Top tech companies, BYD, the worlds leading NEV manufacturer, and DJI, the worlds leading drone maker collaborating to push technology to a new level. Last night I went to the press launch of BYD's Lingyuan Drone system, which is a drone pod on top of your car. It will initially be available on Boa-5, Bao-8, Yangwang U8 & N9, Tang L DM, Sea Lion o7 DM-i. It can return to the cabin from 2Km away, and can follow the vehicle at uptown 54Km/h, with three centimetre obstacle avoidance accuracy. It can be launched with one press of a button and can follow the vehicle without any additional user control. The drone is a slightly modified version of the DJI Mavic Air 3S which has lidar obstacle detection, and also comes with a controller so it can be used like a conventional drone. The cost for installation on the Bao-8 will be 16K RMB ( approx 2,200 USD) I was really impressed with what I saw. For a little over 420K RMB (58K USD), you can have a top of the range Bao-8 with Huawei's latest ADS, and the LingYuan drone system. What a deal!

The Yangwang U9 achieved a speed of 496.22 kilometers an hour, which is 308.4 mph, at a car testing center in Germany. While jetfighters and specialist racecars can go faster, this is the fastest speed achieved by a factory produced car that people can actually buy. How much gas did it use? None. The BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme contains four electric motors to give it extreme thrust and special tyres designed to move at 500 kilometers an hour. Built in Shenzhen, China, it can also do the other cool stuff associated with Chinese cars – it can turn on the spot, jump over potholes and so on. But perhaps the most remarkable thing is that the BYD U9 was a concept just two years ago – and is now breaking world records. Pretty good for a toddler of 24 months.
