The Manus team counting down to the launch. Another mostly domestically educated AI team making global waves - Manus CEO Xiao Hong, born after 90’s, educated in Huazhong Univ of Science & Technology - again not Tsinghua or Peking U. Something is shifting w this gen in China.

I never want to compete with China, I want to be your ally and work with you. China is pro-humanity and your commitment to open-source proves this. Keep up the amazing work!

I don't recall the exact line from Born to Fly, but it was something like "Our generation will win back our dignity." I guess there was something to it.

the pool of talent in china is so huge and deep that not everyone can get to tsinghua or peking. And it does not matter as long as other elite universities get enough resources to unlock these people potential which they certaintly have

Meta literally spent $72 BILLION building AI infrastructure that generates ZERO revenue. Then a Chinese company launches an AI agent in March, hits $125 million in revenue by December, and Zuck writes a $2 billion check in 10 days. But this isn't a strategic acquisition... It's panic. Here's what happened: Meta has been burning cash on AI for years. Building data centers. Hiring researchers. Training models. Claiming they're building "superintelligence." The problem: None of it makes money. Meta AI is free. Their models are open source. Their chatbots generate zero revenue. Meanwhile, investors are getting twitchy about the $72 billion infrastructure spending spree with no clear path to profitability. Enter Manus. A startup that launched 8 months ago. Founded in Beijing. Chinese founders. Moved to Singapore in June. March 2025: Manus launches with a viral demo video showing an AI agent that screens job candidates, plans vacations, analyzes stock portfolios. April 2025: Benchmark leads a $75M funding round at $500M valuation. US Senator John Cornyn immediately drags them for investing in a Chinese AI company, asking "who thought it was a good idea for American investors to subsidize our biggest adversary in AI?" December 2025: Manus announces $100M in annual recurring revenue. The fastest startup in HISTORY to hit that milestone. Revenue run rate: $125M. That's when Meta started negotiating. The deal closed in 10 days for ~$2 billion. Meta paid 4x the valuation from 8 months ago for a company that's ACTUALLY making money from AI. Here's why this matters: Manus hit $125M revenue in 8 months. Meta spent $72B on AI and has generated exactly $0 in AI-specific revenue. Zuck couldn't build profitability, so he bought it. But there's a problem. Manus has Chinese founders. Started in Beijing. Backed by Tencent and HongShan Capital (formerly Sequoia China). In the current geopolitical climate, that's radioactive. So Meta immediately issued a statement: "There will be no continuing Chinese ownership interests in Manus following the transaction, and Manus will discontinue its services and operations in China." Translation: We're buying your revenue and your team, cutting all Chinese ties, and pretending this was always an American company. This is geopolitical cleanup. The numbers tell the real story: Manus processed 147 trillion tokens in 8 months. Created 80 million virtual computers. Hit $100M ARR faster than any startup in history. Meta spent years and $72 billion trying to build this and failed. So they panic-bought the Chinese company that figured it out in 8 months. Meanwhile, this is Meta's third major AI acquisition THIS YEAR: June: Bought 49% of Scale AI for $14 billion to get CEO Alexandr Wang. Earlier this month: Acquired AI-wearables startup Limitless. Now: Manus for $2B. Meta's AI strategy is literally pay-to-win. Because after burning $72 billion, they still can't answer the one question investors keep asking: "When does AI make money?" Manus answered that question in 8 months. Meta couldn't answer it in 3 years. The craziest part: Manus charges $39-$199/month for subscriptions. That's it. No fancy enterprise deals. No complex pricing. Just a simple SaaS model that actually works. And it took a Chinese startup to figure out what Silicon Valley couldn't: people will pay for AI that actually does work instead of just answering questions. So Zuck wrote a $2 billion check, promised to cut all Chinese ownership, and is now claiming credit for "accelerating AI innovation." But everyone watching knows the truth... Meta spent $72B building infrastructure for a business they couldn't figure out how to monetize. Then they bought the company that cracked the code in 8 months. The AI race isn't about who builds the best models. It's about who builds a business that actually makes money. And right now, Meta just admitted they can't do it alone.

“In the 15th century, Asia was the most technologically developed region. Europe had advanced only in a few sectors, including gunpowder, cannons, & ocean-going ships. These three technologies helped Europe to conquer the rest of the world. The conquest of Asia & Africa set back the development of science & technology in our countries, creating the technological divide of today. Another quantum leap in technology & innovation is taking place in the 21st century at a geometric rate, further widening the existing technological divide & leading to the marginalisation of the South. Two key factors are essential for developing nations to come out of this crisis. The first is digitalisation & adopting new technologies such as Big Data, Internet of Things, AI, Blockchain, biotechnology, & genome sequencing. The second is ensuring a workforce skilled in the multifaceted fields of science & technology. A well-equipped & knowledgeable workforce is necessary to accelerate the needed transformation. Let me outline the measures my government is taking. A continuing economic restructuring process after the financial crisis of 2022 allows us to harness the potential of science, technology, & innovation for our future trajectory of sustainable development & high growth. We are currently evaluating the performance of our existing science & technology research institutes, some of which are underperforming. To promote utilising new technologies for Sri Lanka's growth, the government will establish a Technology & Innovation Council & a digital transformation agency. Our universities currently do not have the capacity to create the requisite number of technology specialists. Therefore, we will establish four new universities focusing on new technologies. One of these is the outcome of technological cooperation between India & Sri Lanka. The International Climate Change University will be the fifth. The digital divide presents significant challenges to the development of the global south. These include limited access to costly technology, inadequate digital skills & infrastructure, cultural & institutional barriers, & financing constraints. Global trade barriers further compound these issues. To overcome these challenges, the G77 & China must establish an effective mechanism for cooperation. Otherwise, our endeavours will be limited to immediately reinvigorating the consortium of science & technology & innovation for the South, commonly known as COSTIS. This will be a test of our commitment. A revised Programme of Action with other proposed new measures is required. These measures should include collectively creating technological platforms modelled on the European Union's technology & innovation platforms in the following fields: digitalisation, health medication, AI, & renewable energy, including green hydrogen. Secondly, interested G77 countries must commit to earmarking 1% of their GDP for R&D. This has to be achieved over a decade. Thirdly, we must foster collaboration between governments and the private sector. The brain drain from the South to the North & the resulting loss of educated manpower is another threat to the development of science, technology, & innovation in the South. China, India, Japan, & South Korea have developed science, technology, & innovation by nurturing their own manpower. Therefore, we must ask for compensation from the North for the loss of our manpower. Strengthening South-South cooperation can also play a significant role in addressing the critical issues of expanding our human resources. Sri Lanka urges the Group of 77 & China to work together to introduce a scheme similar to the Colombo Plan to increase collaboration, exchange best practices, & push policies that harness the transformational potential of science, technology, & innovation amongst us. Sri Lanka is committed to supporting the new Hawana Declaration. We must ensure that the collective voice of G77 & China is heard in international fora.”

Today, I had the privilege of speaking to the HUMAIN team at our CEO Townhall. I often say this, and I mean it deeply: I am living my dream... working in a country where energy goes beyond oil. It’s in the people, the ambition, and the belief in building a better future. Saudi Arabia is unlike anywhere else. The hospitality is second to none. The vision is bold. And the commitment to shaping the future is real. What we are building at HUMAIN is foundational. We are not only participating in the AI era, but redefining it. Shifting the narrative from experimentation to real value creation. But more importantly, we are not afraid to challenge what an organization should look like in an AI-native world. In fact, we are pioneering it. We are actively reshaping how we work: - Moving toward a future where AI agents do the work - Empowering our people to focus on high-value thinking, creativity, and decision-making - Building strong foundations in security, governance, and guardrails - Continuously enhancing our models, systems, and operating frameworks This is not theory. This is happening now. What I saw today from our teams gives me absolute confidence: - Products that are not just innovative, but game-changing - Teams building at a speed and quality that challenge global norms - A culture focused on execution, ownership, and impact At #LEAP2026 this year, we will go beyond vision. We will show: Real demos. Real products. Some of them are a first of their kind in the world. And they are built right here in Saudi Arabia. I could not be more proud of this team. What they have accomplished in such a short time is remarkable. This is just the beginning. The future is not something we wait for. It’s something we build. #HUMAIN #LEAP #TheEndOfLimits #AI
